I agree - the GBT is driving me mad. Haven't got the hang of it yet though, I'm too slow with too many missed. I'm trying different techniques to if I can find a better method.

Well I have been trying to come up with a way of being as fast as I can without making stupid errors.

You should come up with a technique suitable for yourself as you continue practicing

Out of interest, what techniques are you guys trying?

I've tried looking straight down at the page and then with the page slightly to one side so looking across the row slightly. I've tried sliding my hand across the page and then again lifting my hand each time. I've tried slowing down a little and then quickly rescanning each line when finished to see if I can spot any obvious errors. I've tried pausing at the end of each page and looking away to get my eyes to re-focus.
I'm now going to try it with a blindfold and holding the pencil in my teeth. I doubt my score will be any worse.

I am attending Reading tomorrow for my first assessment. I have been practising the test material sent to me but it mentions that there may be an interview on the day? Can anyone who has attended this first stage confirm whether there will be an interview or just tests? Many thanks guys

The email I received from FGW did not mention anything about an interview on the day just the tests and if we passed them we would be invited back for stage 2.

If it's the first stage assessment, no interview.

Tomorrow (as we did today), will be your Concentration Test (Dots) and TRP Trainability Tests x 2. If you do well on these you will be put forward to stage 2 within the next few weeks, which will be Reactions Test, then if successful at that followed by Structured Interview.

Good Luck.

So anyone else on the forum that was there today in Reading..?

Hi there,

I applied for a trainee train drivers job, I checked my application about a week ago and it says considered for alternative role and above it there is another application for a trainee train driver role which says shortlisting?

Anyone had that before?
I see above people have had assessments for reading area today/tomorrow has anyone been contacted for Bristol yet

I have applied for Bristol and I'm still showing as awaiting short listing but a few have already got dates on and around the 5th June.

Good luck to everyone who's taking the tests today!

Thanks for the reply

Must be going mad as I meant to say that my assessment is tomorrow (Friday) not today - does anybody else have their first stage assessment in Reading tomorrow morning?

Not looking forward to the Group Bourdon (dots), and did they cover Mechanical Aptitude? Can I also ask how long the day was, 4 hours-ish?

The best of luck to all of you!

In need of some help now, I've received my authority to travel document today but I've not received any info on where my interview is? Nobody is answering the phone at their office either... I know it's in reading and I've booked a hotel so I might not be in if they call back.. I seem to remember reading or hearing somewhere that they were being held in the novatel however that could be totally wrong ?!?!

isn't it at the depot in reading, have you checked your fgw account under 'my appointments'? surely there should be something. the novotel is in bristol and I think you are confused. there is a telephone number for first in aberdeen and may be of some help.

Mine was at the Malmaison which is right next to the train station - You could ring them and see if they have FGW interviews booked in for tomorrow
