First Great Western Customer Host Interview cancellation?

Hi Everyone!

I'm new on here just looking to see If any is in the same boat really.
I applied for the Customer host position at Swansea Station beginning of June 2018, I passed all the online tests and was sent an invite to an Assessment Centre on the 1st August, I thought it went well I got through to the afternoon where we did the announcement and a week later was told I had made it through to the final interview I booked Sept 7th I was over the moon as it's my dream job. I prepared for 2 weeks and received email reminders of my interview.

4 days before my interview I receive an email telling me my interview has to be cancelled due to changes in staff requirements? I was so so disappointed there were a few interview slots available but I had to choose the last one as I was away on holidays the others were held 2 weeks before mine. I'm under the assumption that the first interviews went ahead because if they didn't I would have received a cancellation email much earlier than when I did. At the Assessment day the recruiters kept saying how they needed lots of extra staff for the Autumn and those successful would start training etc so it all seemed very exciting and I was under the impression they needed lots of staff as why else would they pay for assessment days/ interviews?

I feel a little bit in Limbo now and don't really know what to think, is anyone in the same boat? or has anyone had this happen to them? did you hear back? I'm worried that all the hard work I put in will be lost as it's only valid for 6 months and doubt I'll hear anything back.

Guess they had so many good candidates from the earlier interviews (maybe more than they thought) that they decided it wasn't worth bothering with the last few interviews. Harsh but that's the way it seems to be in the rail industry from what I've seen on here.

We were informed that if successful at final interview we would be placed into a hold pool, I just think if they invite for final interviews they should go ahead with all as the last candidate could be the strongest ,otherwise your left in limbo I'll just be patient and see what happens

Turning down definites for a maybe was always going to be a risk. There's always the chance that you'd be where you are anyway.

GWR are usually fairly good with interview flexibility. It may simply be they found enough strong candidates in the first batch of interviews so withdrew the rest. It's a popular job in our parts, there's not many entry level 24k jobs on our side of Offa's Dyke.

They probably couldn't tell you after your assessment day you'd been unsuccessful as at that point you weren't.

It's a tough one, chalk it to experience and don't turn down job offers for an interview in the future.

Oh yes I completely understand it was a risk but this was a job I've always wanted and prepared for well , I just find it slightly unfair that those who booked onto later dates were not even given a chance, for all they know the last interview could be the Strongest candidate? doesn't make sense but hey ho!
