A class 124 would be ideal for mainline tour running, buffet car, plently of coaches, espicially if two are coupled together, top speed of 70mph. Shame that non were saved though.
Agreed. I would absolutely love to travel on a 124 on the main line. But unfortunately, there isn't even one unit to be seen in preservation. :(

Now if you were talking cars you could drive a 1954 Austin A30 without seatbelts, without indicators (just the trafficators), without rear view mirrors, with all drum brakes take it up the M1 (with your foot down all the time) and pay no road tax, minimal insurance (was £48 fully comp about 5 years back), you can even fill it up with leaded petrol and poison the air more as you go - as always one rule for the road and 10'000 more for the rails.

Just remind me how many A30s you usually see when you drive up the A1?

It would be nice if the stupid barrier vehicle rules were relaxed. Wouldn't be so bad but they serve no purpose whatsoever. In the (highly unlikely) event of a crash, there is as much chance of the barrier coach riding up over the underframe of the adjacent passenger coach as it diving under. Plus the risk is tiny, especially considering the milage Mk1 stock does or would do, and the fact that TPWS and additional safety measures mean that the chances of collisions are far smaller than they were when the safety was brought into question anyway. You are more likely to be killed driving to the station than you are travelling on a Mk1 railtour.

Regardling VEPs or other types with lots of doors, all they would have to do is like FGE did with their 312s and lock most of the doors out, leaving just a few. Would reduce drafts and maintenance costs too.

I must admit I hadn't thought of that. You wouldn't be able to recreate the iconic image of hundreds of doors suddenly being flung open on arrival at Victoria though :D

They have relaxed the barrier vehicle rules haven't they? About 2 or 3 months ago?

Not that I'm aware of, the trains I've worked recently have still followed the barrier rule. What I've been told is that the rules are to be relaxed.
