what was your first ecounter with the southern,it can be a good or bad one!,where was it what loco's did you see and what year?

At my nan's house, by the lineside just outside Basingstoke, in about 1980.
47s (I certainly remember 'Titan'), 50s and CIGs mainly.

nice ones boys,i can remeber when i was little to (--1998--) when the line was dominated by CIGs VEPS etc....but ive taken to Networkers mainly and the 442s,319s,etc... basicaly NSE era,keep em' coming though!but hope there good memorys like devon metro and EM2

kind off a good first encounter of the southern region, when snow hill tunnel was first opened and through bedford-brighton services were running, my family were coming home from a day down at brighton (cant remember the full name but think it was a nse day where you could buy a ticket for say 10 pound and it was valid on all nse services), anyway we got to i think Redhill and someone pulled the emergency chord while in the platform, not to much off a problem you would think on a 319 just go and reset it?
But it was a major problem, the offending person who did it, did it with such force that they had pulled it out off its housing, and was hanging down broken, not a problem just wait for the next one home,could it get any worse?
Well yes it could the following train had failed at the signal protecting Redhill station, cue a very long wait on a sticky summers evening, for the fitters to come and attend the failed train and ours, in the end we spent a couple of hours at redhill till the next thameslink service came into the station and picked us up.

i would class that as a good one,it may of felt like a bad day on the actual day but when you look back it is actually quite funny,and i bet you made sure you never got that certain 319 again!

i dont mind what i drive as lond as it gets me + passengers from A to B safely and promptly.

doing Lancing-Brighton with my dad in the early 90s. Old Mk1 slam doors on the West Coastway service.

Then, about the same time, Victoria-Brighton-Lancing with my mum.

My grandparents on both sides lived in quite good view of the railway, one overlooked the entire branch from Bishopstone station to Newhaven Town, with a great view of the harbour and trains leaving Newhaven "Continental" [Marine]. I remember one day seeing the first "Network South East" train down there and thinking it was a "new" train!

I remember when I was at my other grandparents' house in Lewes, I used to sometimes see the "diversions" if there was a posession between Brighton and Wivelsfield, when they would send the dual voltage trains past, which I thought was cool.

I also remember watching the orange aggregate trains being shunted by (what I now know to be) Cromptons at Newhaven Town yard.

I live at a place with a southern connection but my first true encounter was when I went into my dads signal box at Aldershot. He even let me pull the levers (under his guidence) I wonder what the drivers would have thought if they knew a five year old was controlling the signals.

in them days everything was better,no health & safety these days if you did that the H&S would make up an excuse like the signal leavers are to dangerous and will cut your arms off or you have to wear fire gloves with gogles to protect yourself!your a lucky person getting to do this as a child nowdays no-one would get a chance,except maybe on a preservartion line
