If you are booked on a train without First class accommodation, but when you get the train a Train with First class shows up, Are you allowed to sit in first class or what is the procedure in this case?

No first class booked in timetable surely means it is declasified s

Yes, according to the majority of the TOCs, perversely NXEA used to take a different view. ;)

Not sure what Greater Anglia's take on this is nowadays.

Basically, don't assume anything. Not being timetabled doesn't mean it's automatically declassified. Ask the guard. :)

The Hertford line was recently declassified, and GA have posters up advising that customers can sit in First for those trains only. So maybe they have improved...

I've been on a FCC 319 and SE 465s for "mainline use" with 1st many times heading to metro destinations (these are all DOO, no guard) where the screens say "standard class only" and most people take that to mean, quite literally, sit in standard class only.

So what happens in those instances?

Looking at the current Hertford East to London timetable produced by GA, plenty of trains show as having 1st class. :-?

Southern usually put up the more helpful and clearer "Please note: 1st class accommodation may be used by Standard class ticket holders" if a 377 with 1st seating runs a 'metro' service.
