Looking at several Victorian layouts of station buildings, generally you have:
1. The general waiting room.
2. 1st class gentlemen's waiting room.
3. 1st class ladies waiting room.
4. 2nd class ladies waiting room.
The general waiting rooms built by the East Lancs and L&Y railway companies were not built for comfort. In general, the seating was hard wooden seats which lined the walls of the waiting room, and sometimes stand alone long benches in the middle.
This led me to think, what was the 1st class seating like?
Was it similar to the general waiting room seating?
Was the seating cushioned?
Were there individual seats? and so on...
Can anyone describe to me what was Victorian 1st class seating like? If you've paid more for 1st class, don't you expect that extra?
Also, and I've touched on this before but still unclear - going to the toilet as a 1st class passenger.
All the plans I've seen show toilets for both 1st and 2nd class ladies waiting rooms...
Would a lady travelling 3rd class be allowed to use the 2nd class ladies toilets?
Non of the 1st class gentlemen's rooms seem to show WC's, so as a male travelling 1st class, where would you "go"?
Thanks,
Andy.
