First class travel in Ireland.

A French friend and I will be spending a week travelling around Ireland by train and bus next month. I shall be using standard class FIP coupons and he a standard class Interrail pass. I haven't been to Ireland for four years. Is it still the case the holders of standard class tickets can occupy unreserved first class seats on Dublin-Belfast and Dublin-Cork InterCity services and then upgrade to first class by paying the train manager?

Indeed so - though for peace of mind you can pre-reserve an upgrade on the Irish Rail site by selecting the Free Travel Pass option. Note this does not work for one way Enterprise trips originating in Northern Ireland.
