Could it be "otherwise shown" by the "First class" stickers on the doors to the carriage?

I, and many others, believe that it could not. The phrase "otherwise shown" should be restricted to information within the timetable.

FGW recently insisted in their reply that a service can have First Class accommodation despite being advertised otherwise. They soon backed down after I sent them a further letter asking more questions and admitted that it was incorrect.

Does that answer BurgessT's query about missing timetable symbols? And Muzer's search for an official source defining declassifcation? Does it really need to be any more complicated?

It doesn't need to be complicated. But given the contradictory responses from 2 SWT queries, a revenue protection officer and those with inside information here, it seems it is!

And I'm just a humble passenger trying to get a seat in the rush hour without getting a fine!

I should point out to anyone coming across this thread for future reference that London Midland's opinion is different to that of South West Trains', whereby if a train is timetabled as Standard Class only, but the train has First Class seating, they'll still charge a First Class fare or penalty fare.

Indeed. I'm not thoroughly convinced that that line in the timetable could be a convincing defence, should you want to appeal a penalty fare. It's more than I thought there was, but it definitely doesn't come close to what there used to be (a specific mention in NRCoC).

What's the deal with FCC on their Sutton Loop services? I often get on a rush hour 319 with 1st class where the scrolling platform displays say "standard class only service". Does this mean I can sit/stand in the first class section when travelling on my Oyster card?

Yes - in this case, you have been explicitly told (by the displays) that First Class has been declassified, so I would expect you'd never receive any hassle sitting/standing there.

I always used to announce it and I know a few others that do, maybe you cant hear it above your ipod!

I often announce a service is declassified if it's running with a unit with a 1st class compartment, unfortunately what can happen is a sudden scrum to fill the vacant seats and I have even witnessed heated arguments between passengers as a result. What I also make sure is that the partition doors that separate 1st from standard are locked open.
