First class on the Cambrian route?

With the climate emergency surely it is long overdue for the CO2 emissions per seat/ per mile to be calculated for each class of train and for each class of travel. I think that First Class seating on some of these small trains would most likely work out to be worse than a car

If I had any involvement, I'd have bid for the Cambrian the following:-

5-car hourly clockface Aberystwyth to Brum Intl service, one coach as 1st and a small buffet, so a proper IC service. FLIRTs would be perfect (no fumes in New St) though there are many other options too.

Separate 2-hourly clockface Mach-Pwllheli local service using dedicated 3-car DMUs of some kind (possibly 230s if the things can be made to work) with lots of luggage and cycle space for the holiday passengers.

Same service 7 days a week.

The IC Aberysytwyth service? Fantastic.

230s to Pwllheli?!!!!!! I’ve done the full journey from Pwllheli to Machynlleth very nice journey - on a comfortable 158. On a sweaty 230? Maybe not thanks. Let’s not forget these are London Underground trains, and retired ones at that!

I am not sure if the 230s have air conditioning but the 158s only have so-called air cooling, I think. I would also argue that on hot days the need for air conditioning is greater in the inland areas which tend to be warmer than the coast. Also trains in inland areas are more likely to be ridden by people in business suits or other work uniforms whereas a large proportion of summer riders on the Pwllheli route will be holidaymakers in shorts and tee shirts.

For a suitable fee, Vivarail will install whatever type of HVAC system a customer wants.

The TfW sets that are on order for North Wales will have air conditioning fitted.
