Is there any way to buy first class tickets between Newcastle and Penrith during LNER's diversions via Carlisle on 28 September (on the diverted trains, not without a massive detour)? The closest I can find on the LNER website is York to Carlisle via Newcastle fares, which are considerably more expensive than what I'm hoping for. I've tried Avanti's website as well, as I'd expect them to at least sell First Class tickets between Carlisle and Penrith, but no luck there either.

Avanti do sell First Class tickets between Carlisle and Penrith, if you're using their website, you may need to hit "See More Fare Types" before they show up.

Undiscounted Adult First Class Anytime tickets between Penrith and Carlisle
No Restriction - £31.30
Avanti Only - £26.60
TPE Only - £25.80

Walk up first class tickets should certainly be available between Carlisle and Penrith (North Lakes) assuming there's a service running on the day in question. Prices vary depending on whether you travel on Avanti, on TPE, or you want an inter-available ticket. P.S. Not sure why Avanti seem to have a First class advance tier which is priced more expensively than a walk-up first class fare.

It does show up for Carlisle to Penrith by itself, but not for Newcastle to Penrith.

But it's the bit on diverted LNER services I'm interested in First Class for; for fifteen minutes at most I wouldn't bother with it.

LNER haven't been great, in my opinion at putting APs in for these diversions. As you've noted it appears unless you're travelling from York or beyond they've simply not loaded any APs in either class.

So, there's no way of buying a 1st class ticket between Newcastle and Carlisle as they don't exist! Only thing I can think to suggest is Weekend First or perhaps a Seatfrog upgrade.

Presume it's to do with Northern being the fare setter between Newcastle and Carlisle (via Hexham) and they don't do 1st class. However, is a Weekend First Class upgrade (= £35) not possible on the diverted LNER train?

There isn't anything on Seatfrog, at least not yet. I don't see any reason why a Weekend First wouldn't be possible providing there's room, although if £35 extra each way for an hour and a half is the cheapest option for First, I'll stick with Standard.

Why not do a search, this has been asked every year for at least the last 4 years.
I did search. The only vaguely-relevant thread I could find was this one from three years ago, which doesn't mention it First Class tickets are available anywhere.

That's why there's no Any Permitted fares but there's nothing preventing LNER introducing their own fares.

I've had weekend first on one of those (back when it was a reasonable price).
