There have been several threads discussing the virtues and vices of First Class rail travel, including the lacklustre offer from many TOCs.

I often travel First Class with Transpennine Express, and I have taken advantage of their (only) First Class Lounge at Huddersfield, usually when it is a bit early to enjoy the delights of The Kings Head or the Head Of Steam.

Today was the first time I used the First Class toilet. Sparkling clean, and most pleasant, like the rest of the lounge BUT....

...the toilet roll is just 89mm wide, 14.4% narrower than Andrex (104mm)

Something of a First World problem, I appreciate, but remarkably parsimonious nevertheless?

You take a tape measure into toilets?

I trust it wasn't that horrible stuff which fingers can go through. A truely bad end to the toilet experience.

I love this thread already.

I imagine the toilet roll is probably the same as they use in the rest of the station - The same as trains with first class that have their own toilet - i.e. GWR HSTs.

I seem to remember, from years gone by, that HST's had narrower than standard toilet rolls because there was not room for a full sized version in the toilets.

I think you should use 14.4% more sheets of paper. In fact round it up to 15% to punish their tightfistedness.

Are you sure it isn't a problem with a normal size roll being out of gauge???

I tend to notice the thickness/number of layers rather than the width. I'm tempted to say that on the hole the width doesn't really matter, but that would be just too puerile, even for me. ;)

Can I please clarify - Do you mean hole or whole? I wasn't too sure given the subject in hand.

Although there is a ruler on my Leatherman, on this occasion I took a sample home, and later consulted Mr Google regarding Andrex.

Can't have been that bad if you nicked some to take home with you

Is this a sign that some TOCs are papering over their cracks?

I have a tape measure in my work bag. It's reasonable to believe someone could be carrying a tape measure. No doubt there is an app too.
