First Class Britrail

Hey guys,

I'm thinking of doing an ALR (well, Britrail because I can) in first class. I'll start out in Bristol Parkway, but aslong as I'm in a major city (with a hostel) overnight there shouldn't be an issue.

Just wondering what the best trains to get are? I'm obviously looking to travel the more expensive/food filled routes.

(Tips on how on earth to plan a route are also appreciated! I'm planning on either getting a 4 or 8 day ticket.)

I think this would be better suited in the Fares thread, but a mod will no doubt decide shortly.

Secondly, an All Line Rover is only available as a 7 day or 14 day product, none of this 4 in 8.

Finally, expensive doesn't mean best, and "free" food is not easy to get and is probably not worth the price of the 1st Class All Line Rover.

Why not go Bristol-Penzance, Penzance-Dundee, Dundee-Aberdeen, Aberdeen-Inverness, Inverness-London, London-Dover etc etc...

My friend Ian is referring to Britrail - which for all intents and purposes is the same as an ALR (but he qualifies for it when most people don't)

Bristol-Penzance would be a good introduction to the railway network, especially Dawlish in summer.

If you are going first class just note cornish/devon branch lines don't have first class. (Except XC or FGW HST's to Newquay/Paignton).

If I was using a Britrail Pass for 4 days, I'd be tempted to do a whistlestop UK tour along the lines First Class suggested. This would allow me to see a lot of the country, and experience a wide range of different trains and companies rather than chugging about on branch lines, however scenic they are!

I wouldn't get a FC pass just for the food, but for long distance travel it will be more comfortable to travel that way, and the complimentary food and drink will be bonus! If the FC pass is a reasonable price for the OP, then I say go for it!

Here's a thought - how about Bristol - Penzance - Glasgow - Mallaig - Thurso Edinburgh - Lowestoft? Doesn;t that cover all four compass points?

If the intention is to get as much food as possible then my advice would be not to purchase it, and instead spend the money on food!

Surely you get a Britrail/ALR because you want to travel places? And only you know where you want to travel.

If you are asking for scenic lines, that has been covered in numerous topics, but as you aren't I won't do a search and find some links (click Search and take a look if you want, though!)

If you are after loco haulage, or to travel by particular trains, take a look at the Traction & Rolling stock topics, or do a search to posts confined to those threads, to see if your questions are answered. If they are not, free free to ask.

There are numerous topics about the food offerings on different trains, notably the recent thread about East Coast's offer not being as good as they claim.
