Hi Chaps and Chapettes,

317729 and another 317/7 are at Hornsey to work as an 8-car Diagram for First Capital Connect.

I was wondering if anybody "in the know" knew if there were pre-planned diagrams for the pair? Better still; I was wondering if anybody had the 317/7 diagrams period?

Best,

Nick.

When are the 317/7s due to start working this diagram?

the 07:20 from Letchworth has been a 317/3 each day this week. (& a variety of 317/321/365 last week)

How long is a piece of string? They were meant to start working in May so currently over 2 months late, No idea how far driver training is as they have only just got them I think so doubtful to have them out before late August/early September at a guess.

*update*

The one currently at Hornsey won't be used solo so is currently waiting for the second 317/7 to arrive, that said it's expected each will spend a week on depot before being used for whatever reasons however the one currently there has been there a week and not much has been done regards to it.

However the second 317/7 is meant to arrive tomorrow however this is very doubtful, we shall see though.

Got on one of the 317/7s back with AGA from Stratford a week or so ago, and it didn't look like they'd cleaned it since it went into storage. Internal gangway doors fixed open (fire risk?), windows that don't shut properly, dirty floor and PIS warning about Oyster pay as you go not valid beyond Enfield Lock etc.

I hope they're getting a bit more attention on the ECML?

317708 and 317729 appear to have entered traffic - just in time for the end of FCC. They arrived at Hornsey with FCC branding, but like most (all?) other FCC units have now had this removed and are unbranded white with red doors.

317708 was on the rear of what appears to have been 1P07 07:26 Peterborough - King's Cross with 317341 leading yesterday (4th September), but was paired with 317729 leading this morning (5th September) waiting to depart King's Cross with the ECS off the same working. This seems to suggest that use with any of the other GN 317s will occur is one of the pair isn't available.

Does anyone know whether and what they've worked in the afternoon?

Thanks...

317708/29 were on 1P47 (07.33 SNO-KGX, 0703-ish from PBO), which is the regular turn for a pair of 317s. Noted as I overtook them on 1P05. I've never seen 317s on 1P07!

The internal doors are fixed open because they don't work properly :P They tended to stick open, stick closed, or slap customers when they opened. Hence on 317722, they were replaced by slam-doors :) It is very weird that the GA units kept NXEA delivery (and they look a right state, let me tell you :P ) while the FCC units got GA livery.... This annoys me more than it should ;)

If this is true, then it can be ascertained that the 317/7s are operating as part of the general 317 pool, and not on specific diagrams. The post in the FRD thread is no longer necessary in this case :P

I was told on my traction course that we were not allowed to lock gangway doors open as they provide a fire/smoke barrier. Do the rules vary from one TOC to another?

As far as I am aware the booked workings for the two Class 317/7s are set as per issued carriage working notices however note that because the Class 365 fleet has to undergo refurbishment at Ilford, it may be the case they have to step up the diagrams from time to time but as far as I'm aware they will usually only be used on the set diagrams I have provided in the Diagrams thread and so DO still apply.

317/7s are likely to be an exception due to the extreme unreliability of their retrofitted powered gangway doors. They are far more dangerous stuck shut (as I have found them before) than they are stuck open :P

I have taken them away for now what with the upcoming franchise change and everything. Will put them back if under Govia they settle down into their original diagrams :)

Cl378s anyone? S Stock...?

There are some faults that may require you to take an individual vehicle out of use for which it is necessary to have connecting doors that can be secured, such as door faults and broken windows. If you are unable to secure the vehicle due to not having a connecting door between vehicles the entire unit must be taken out of service. But yes, it is possible to run with connecting doors open.

The problem with the Cl317/7 connecting doors were the air pistons. Even if they worked properly you could be waiting several seconds before they opened. I found it helped to keep the button pressed in which seemed to get them to work more reliably. Yes you'd find the odd set that were broken and had to be opened manually but it wasn't so many as to suggest a widespread problem.

Wnxx.com has a photo of them apparently returning to Eastliegh on 16th September at http://www.wnxx.com/14/1409/160914/66722.htm (login required). Is this an indication that GTR does not believe they are needed? In the end they only seem to have been working for a couple of weeks...

Cheaper not to hire them I expect. But what a waste of railway monety fitting the retention tanks etc and another sub-fleet of units as the rst of the 317/7s don't have them. They didn't stick around long for FCC and were for cover during the Class 365 refurbishment, so look out for short forms.
