Buckinghamshire's bus changes webpage shows some changes from 2 April, mainly that the 4 will only run between Heathrow and Cippenham and a new 6 will run hourly on to Maidenhead - actually it is the existing 6 to Knolton Way extended to Maidenhead. This section used to be very frequent - now hourly!

Nothing on First's own website yet.

With these double deckers coming from Glasgow, what routes are they going to be used on?
The 4 - Heathrow to Cippenham - I guess will have a pvr of 4 or 5
The new 6 will be pvr of 2
The 7 - Britwell to Heathrow T5 looks like pvr of 5
The 8 - Slough to T5 via Staines looks like pvr of 6
I wouldn't consider any of the others likely and the 3 I think is impossible.
Intrigued to know what they are required for, given there have been very few double deckers in the area for many years.
There must be a need or they would surely have stayed in Glasgow where there clearly is, from the posts on this forum.

Thanks for posting this, much appreciated.

I'd expect they'll mainly be used on Heathrow routes and the X74. Route 3 runs under the Langley rail bridge which is single decker only. The last time First Slough had any was about 5 years ago with at least one ex-London Plaxton President in Legoland livery. Slough used to have plenty of Bristol VRs in the 1990's from its former London Country North West fleet.

Ridership in general is looking pretty decent at the moment, the £2 flat fare is definitely helping with loadings. The 7 corridor (Britwell-Farnham Road-A4-Slough-Langley-Heathrow) has always been their strongest route for loadings. They've had to cut back frequency on the 7 with driver shortages, so the e400s may help with any overcrowding. In Slough, Greenline 702 and 703, Carousel 106/107, TfL 81 are all double deck routes.

They attempted to axe the Maidenhead - Huntercombe portion of route 4 without any replacement, in the middle of last year citing low patronage, but there was a last minute reprieve. There were even A4 posters hastily affixed to bus shelters on the route suggesting that passengers could use the Elizabeth Line instead. Buses on the A4 Maidenhead-Slough corridor currently have reasonable peak loadings, but it's obviously going to be far less attractive once it goes hourly.

As Berkshire doesn’t have its own thread yet (or I couldn't find it!), It appears that the first of the E400 MMCs (34380) due for Slough has been repainted and is about to head south:

Too little, too late, the problem is that they cannot suit the buses to the demand, these doubledeckers won't be needed during the day, apart from maybe 2 journeys in the morning and 2 in the afternoon as they just carry air from one terminus to the other. Shame to say that First Berkshire is a shadow of its former glory, with reduced routes, frequencies totally not suited to the demand, especially in peak times, everyday cancellations and shambolic level of passenger information - not mentioning that they don't even accept competition tickets which used to be a case when I was a regular user of buses in Slough back in 2015-16. I would be glad if they finally left Slough for good and leave their operations to Thames Valley Buses or any other operator that can provide a much better and unified service across the area.

I don't actually remember when I had used a bus in Slough, as the services over last couple of years became so unreliable I started taking taxi not to be late to work everyday and then it pursued me to buy a car.

Slough is isolated from other First operations, which doesn't help

That's true. I think that the decline actually started when First had sold off their London operations and transferred management of Berkshire depots to Southampton, not long after they had lost Bracknell and then the whole operations seemed to be on the verge of collapse, with the 2016 decisisons to split the long cross town routes to shorter ones terminating at Slough Bus Station, forcing people to change to increase ''reliability'' - that actually in reality broken the links that were there for ages and as a result they lost majority of the passengers. Then the reflection was declining passenger numbers, also loss of funds from BAA and surrouding councils had caused the cuts to begin - all coupled with massive bus ticket price increases, totally not reflecting the quality of the service.

In addition we have to consider a decline of Slough town centre and its demise of an actual shopping or enternaintment destination and we have a whole picture of what went wrong...

Agreed. First London took a hands off approach, letting the local Beeline management get on with things largely without interference. The rot very much did set in when management was transferred to Southampton.

34383 - SO68 HGE (ex-First Glasgow E400 MMC) is back in service. Still has the turquoise front, but minus the route 38 branding. It did an early afternoon run to Heathrow and back on route 8 yesterday. This morning (13/3/23) it was on route 7, Britwell-Heathrow.

I think it's the first double deck since they were loaned a Streetdeck to evaluate from First Leicester back in 2018. That was used on the X74.

Seems to be a common theme between Plymouth (ugobus), Southampton and Slough?

I remember for a while during that time the X74 was using ex. Bracknell Tridents, as for some time they did not allow standees on the M40 stretch of the route, so the remedy was to provide a bigger vehicle once they got rid of ex. Madejski P&R Scania's Wrights which were IMHO the best buses for this route. the engines on them were well suited for the motorway bit and the A355 stretch between Farnham Royal and Beaconsfield services, they had easily accelerated on the hills, whereas other buses struggled to climb, especially Streetlites which I think were the worst possible choice for this particular route.

Anyway, looking forward for seeing more deckers in Slough, if they cannot make routes run more often due to driver shortages, at least they won't leave passengers behind which often is the case in the school peak hours.

Couldn't comment on that...
I don't think you can draw that many parallels. Plymouth was a foolhardy opportunistic competitive foray that First embarked upon and was then outflanked by the sale to Go Ahead. First were thinking that they could bully their way (courtesy of their then senior leadership team) and as soon as Plymouth was sold to GA, that was put to bed.

Plymouth was a corporate failure, Berkshire a local one. For Southampton....perhaps somewhere in between.

The (recently-ish introduced) 103 Slough - High Wycombe has gone to Double Decker operation in recent weeks, so maybe First are fighting back ?

Those Trident/Plaxton Presidents were pretty sprightly from a standing start. I only rode one once when it was randomly on the 4B route (Britwell-Slough via Haymill & Slough Trading Estate, IIRC 4B route was axed in the big 2016 route cull).

They only compete south of Beaconsfield Services. Carousel's 103 serves Beaconsfield whilst the X74 takes the M40 direct to/from Loudwater.

The 103 is the revived Arriva 74 route (It interworked with Arriva 37 Wycombe-Maidenhead with a day ticket valid on both routes). The 74 was jointly run with First before the First X74 came about.

For the RailAir 2 Guilford to Heathrow, do First have an outstation in Guilford ?

Slough to Guildford is 27 miles, a lot of dead miles there
Indeed. You might suppose they start and finish at Heathrow, next door to Slough, but looking at the timetable all workings start and finish at Guildford.

Just on the topic, I had a quick glance through my little archive and here's how the network was looking in 2009 at peak of its development ( I wish First didn't delete themselves from wayback machine).

It's so sad to look at today's maps with a fraction of these routes left, togheter with slashed frequencies. However, as this was the time I had my intertest in the local buses the most, I still seem to remember the details of the network from back then - 71, 77 and 78 and 75 /76 used to interwork, so on Heathrow each route changed to the other, the PVR of then 5 of these 7 series routes was close to 30 buses, now I don't think all First's Berkshire routes involve as many vehicles :)

74 was an interesting one indeed, as mentioned before. Initally started as an hourly service, that was direct competition to Arriva's 74 with better vehicles (as far as I remember first vehicles on this route was a pair of 2002 ex First London Citaros, still red and double doored, they were repainted to barbie livery and converted to one doored some time after), then they figured out they can mis-out Beaconsfield via M40 bit and re-introduced the route as X74 with alternating times, so there was a bus to Wycombe every 15 minutes during daytime - one of the reasons I decided to study in Wycombe, whilst still living at home. They even had a nice offer of a 4-weekly ticket issued on the X74 that was vaild on the rest of Slough's network that I had made a lot of use during that time :)

Sorry for a post under post, but I have an update - First had officially confirmed the changes available earlier on Bucks CC website, about the level of service from 2nd April. Nothing major apart from increasing the frequency of route 7 from every 30 to every 20 minutes (wonder why they do it for the whole day, instead of focusing on peak times) extending 6 from Slough to finish in Maidenhead, but shortening 4 to Cippenham Green. Frequencies stay the same - 6 every 60 minutes, 4 every 30 minutes and some minor timing changes to Sunday timetables on 3 and X74.

The RA2 runs past the end of my road. I used to be very cynical about how it could make any money but it is sufficiently well used (and priced) to be a success and I've even used it myself a few times.
What really helped was when national express pulled the Woking - Heathrow service.
We shouldn't forget that the A3/M25 means that any dead-running from Guildford - Slough only takes about 30 mins off peak.
The other factor is that South Western Railway is operated by First who heavily market & promote the RA2 from both Guildford & Woking stations.

Beeline 1.0: 1990's - National 1's and VR's in their third decade, scruffy Lynxes and unwanted Renault S75s, dusty interiors and woeful punctuality.

Beeline 2.0: 2014 - First's repainted yellow Citaros for Bracknell in a last ditch attempt to win back punters who'd switched to Courtney.

Third time lucky eh?

Surely we had a Beeline 1.1?

1.0 was the original Beeline from 1987 with the less vibrant yellow and brown (or was it some dark grey?)
1.1 was the brighter Best Impressions one with the bright yellow and blue skirt and the orange band

Beeline 2.0 used the same colours as 1.1 but in the First template

I rather liked 1.1.
