First Aid

Right. After a little incident tonight... I was just wondering, what to do in this type of incident?

Basically... A bottle blew up in my sisters friends face... And his nose (bridge) got cut, and obviously it was bleeding.

Fair enough - it was deep, and quite heavy, but when me and my friend both did First Aid Training, we were taught to leave it for ten minutes... Then if it still bleeding, or bleeds through the applied compression - ring an ambulance.

BUT

Thinking about it now... Should I have called the ambulance as soon as the incident happened?? Fair enough - we got clear of the danger first, and then rang it - maybe 2 minutes, but should I have left it longer?

Looking at other sites... Your supposed to ring straight away, but I did my training with 6th Form a year ago... And was taught that, and my mates nurse training told her the same thing... So, i'm rather confused!!

Always ring the ambulance,

You only have a basic understanding of first aid and would need a fully trained paramedic to take over.

Not to be funny... But it's not "basic"

I am a first aider... And I do know the in's and out's of things... So, ya know - fair enough, they have more equipment than I do at a riverside, but ya get me?

In my experience you ring an Ambulance when it is an emergency, where a person requires immediate medical attention where basic first aid cannot be fully applied, or if they are in a life threatening situation or if you have no means to take your self to those said places.

If you do need urgent medical attention but a hospital trip is necessary and you are able to be taken to A&E or a doctors surgery then you do that.

I don't know how it all works over there, but an Ambulance trip here can cost you thousands, and a helicopter trip can literally cost you an arm and a leg, hence why you get Ambulance membership which costs you a couple of dollars a week.

If you don't have Ambulance membership then you often think twice about calling one if the situation can be resolved safely and effectively without the need for one.

It's all dependent on the situation. I'd say a bottle blowing up in your face is reasonably severe by the way you describe it, but if I was you on your own I would have probably rung the ambulance first before trying to slow down bleeding, but from what I remember of my first aid training your told to try and get someone attention to help. Remember that time is the key with any situation where life is involved, the quicker the ambulance gets there the better.

This is why, much as people whinge about it, I'm grateful for the existence of the NHS.

What ever the situation I think call a ambulance I know First Aid and if this happened to me I would let them deal with it as there expert's.

Why I would not even try doing first aid just incase it accidently went wrong (not likely) but alway's leave it to the experts.
