They used to have a ”two trip” single fare some time ago if I remember right? If I’m honest, I think it’s terrible that there is no transfer fare. Ideally the maximum fare should allow a transfer to another service within a certain time scale (say 60 mins) like you can have on many other systems. I see absolutely no reason why this can’t be done, it doesn’t need a separate fare.
They still do. Current fare for the two trip journey ticket is £4.20; a saving of 25p against a day ticket.

That isn't really a two trip ticket and is more just down to how the Tap & Cap works.

A present if you use Tap & Cap your first journey is £2.85 regardless of length (since you can't tap off), your second journey is then £1.35 (bringing the total to £4.20) then your third journey is 50p bringing the total to £4.70 which is the price standard of a day ticket, at this point you've reached the "cap" and the rest of your journeys for the day are free.

Under the new "TOTO" (Tap on/Tapoff) scheme your first journey will be whatever the single ticket for that distance is, your second journey will be the new two trip ticket then after that you'll be capped at the price of the day ticket with all subsequent journeys being free. It's not entirely clear what the prices for the two trip ticket are as the internal release is vague on the details but the fact three journeys will now cap at the day ticket instead of four would imply that single fares are increasing.

There shouldn’t be a separate fare for changing buses though. The maximum fare is, what, £2.85. As an example, I could make a journey on the 1 or 2 from Bridge of Don to Garthdee on that fare. If, however, I jump off on Holburn Street and change to the 19 and travel as far as Anderson Drive (a shorter journey) I would be penalised and have to fork out £4.20. My point is that there is NO reason why that journey couldn’t be made for £2.85 other than a lack of flexibility on the part of First.

Free transfers work on many other bus systems across the world and I’m at an absolute loss to understand why it can’t be done here. It was done when First properly served the park and ride sites, albeit solely on a P&R ticket.

Why not wait and see what is actually coming? The distance based fares First are trialling in Wales offers a 30 minute transfer window which gives you 30 minutes to board another bus and your fare will be the total distance of the first and second bus (unless the second journey is the return for the first journey when they will be charged separately), so this could easily be happening in Aberdeen too.

I’ve been in Aberdeen driving for quite a short time now.

My take on fares? A £2 flat Single, £3.20 2-Journey and £4.50 Day Ticket should be more than pricey enough.

Most people are paying the £2.65 fare

TFL will offers a second journey using one single ticket if use within a specific time frame but look at the state they are in, this comes at a cost and doesn’t seem to be sustainable.

I personally think the Aberdeen network could be a little more diverse, only the 13 going to the Queens Link leisure Park doesn’t seem to offer great prospect for any wanting to go there, particularly in the summer months.

Aberdeen Royal Infirmary seems to be getting short changed as well.

Demand for the beach service has always been inconsistent depending on weather and time of year, the problem with the 15 and it's predecessors was that the 30 minute frequency was insufficient on certain days, but for most of the year any higher of the frequency wouldn't have been viable.

The 13 being rerouted to replace the 15 was a huge improvement and somewhat a stroke of genius as it saw saved a bus while also seeing a much improved service to the beach including an increase in frequency and the introduction of evening journeys. Additionally the 13 offers far better connections to the rest of the city compared to the 15. Add to that extending the 13 to Hillhead in the evening and doubling the frequency from hourly to half hourly has meant that the Seaton leg of the 13 in the evening is quite busy now and there's far less pressure on the 20. Before the July changes, when the evening service on the 13 was hourly, the buses usually ran empty. Another smart thing that they did is that rerouting the 13 via Guild Street means it serves the same stops as the 3 to Mastrick and 59 to Northfield. With all that said they'd be as well axing the journeys via Footdee; even under the 15 you'd rarely see anyone get on or off there and if you did it was usually tourists who could easily walk from Links Road. I'm yet to see anyone use the 13 to/from Footdee. It's the classic case of local residents and a councillor campaigning for a service they never have and never will use.

I've already experienced the 13 loading at Queen's Links with a fair few particularly in the evenings and weekends and it's currently still chilly outdoors.

Add to that extending the 13 to Hillhead in the evening and doubling the frequency from hourly to half hourly has meant that the Seaton leg of the 13 in the evening is quite busy now and there's far less pressure on the 20,
That might be so but there is now some students being left at Hillhead because they've had streetlites on the 20, this proved a problem just the weekend past, most aren't using the 13 to Union St/Guild St simply because it's a longer route via Queens links, from what I've experienced the 13 is mostly used for by a few students at best to and from beach boulevard to Hillhead.

Presumably that will continue to be an issue if small vehicles are used on the 20.

Loadings have also been a squeeze on the 1 & 2 around 7pm as the larger buses are being removed at night, that's fine but there removal seems abit premature, certainly on a Friday/saturday as the better weather and longer nights make a comeback.

Another curio I've got about Aberdeen seems to be a certain reluctance for people to go upstairs on doubles, just today on a 2 I see people shoulder to shoulder down stairs yet the upper deck more than half empty, and the tri axles really don't have great space down stairs.

On a side note I forgot how bad the turning circles are on those Enviro 500s since they were in Glasgow.

before the July changes when the evening service on the 13 was hourly the buses usually ran empty.
My assumption of this is that between January to July 2022 the saturation of free travel passes at huge expense to the tax payer has brought them out since they don't need to pay now as oppose to walk.

Youngsters also now using the 13 from queens links to Seaton most likely walked before, but again it's free now so why walk.

Another smart thing that they did is that rerouting the 13 via Guild Street means it serves the same stops as the 3 to Mastrick
Or this created another problem for the 13, after being late to hand the bus over to another driver at Castle St this week traveling in the Hillhead direction I ended up being 6 minutes late to drop the bus off despite all the way from Scatterburn to Union St I was on time until I got to Carmelite St/Guild St and I'm almost certain it was for the sake of two people boarding at guild st.

The 3 I haven't driven but I'm almost certain has the same problem now and again, why not just Union Terrace > Union St > Market St in both directions, turning left from Union Terrace on to Union St is directly going onto a bus lane with no cars whatsoever, naturally as a result turning right from Union St to Market St is MUCH quieter at peak time.

The 20, sits for 6 minute of layover on Guild St causing mayhem when it's due particularly at peaktime, particularly when a 3 to Mastrick, 12 to Heathryfold, 13 to Scatterburn and a 59 to Northfield are all showing up around the same time causing mayhem in the process..

After experiencing it firsthand I'll certainly never see these route choices as great.

With all that said they'd be as well axing the journeys via Footdee, even under the 15 you'd rarely see anyone get on or off there and if you did it was usually tourists who could easily walk from Links Road; i'm yet to see anyone use the 13 to/from Footdee. Footdee is a rather stupid addition and on most occasions councillors are as clueless as those making the route decisions.

The 20 I believe used to operate Union St > Broad St > Gallowgate in both directions but it was changed to operate via Castle St/North West St only so it could serve Morrisons in only one direction traveling to Hillhead, very odd.

It might seem a bit odd now, but you need to consider how the 20 worked in The Old Days. It was literally just a shuttle bus that connected the key Aberdeen University sites; there was the large accommodation site at Hellhead of Satan Hillhead of Seaton, the main campus in Old Aberdeen and Marischal College which, before the council spent millions on turning it into their headquarters, was still used by the University for lectures, exams and other events such as concerts. There was also the multi-level Student Union building which is on the corner of Upper Kirkgate and Gallowgate, but no longer used for that purpose. I note from Google Streetview that there is a new building in place to the right of Brewdog (formerly the Marischal Bar); there was an older granite building there that was also part of the Union. It generated a fair bit of traffic in itself!

From Mounthooly roundabout the 20 went up the Gallowgate, turned left into Littlejohn Street and terminated there. Anyone who wanted to use the service to go to Morrisons (Safeway as it was then) would get off there and walk round the corner into West North Street. It would probably have been possibly to remain on the bus and alight opposite the supermarket, but there was often a short layover time at the terminus so it was quicker to walk for most people.

I've no idea what the loadings are like these days, but it ran on a 12 minute daytime frequency with a decker and could quite often be full and standing.

The 20 is every half an hour now, you can pack a Streetlite you still can’t pack a double decker.

I agree regarding the 1/2 and 20. Both should be decker operated in the evenings, from November until the start of last month most of the evening 1/2s were being E500/Citaro operated but that seemed to stop after the last board changes.

The 20 tends to be lightly used on weekdays during the day but at the weekends and in the evenings it's a different story.
Another curio I've got about Aberdeen seems to be a certain reluctance for people to go upstairs on doubles, just today on a 2 I see people shoulder to shoulder down stairs yet the upper deck more than half empty, and the tri axles really don't have great space down stairs
This has always been an issue with deckers in Aberdeen and particularly on the 1/2, it's one of the main reasons local management have favoured articulated buses as people are much more likely to sit in the rear half of an articulated bus vs upstairs on a decker. I caught a 2 from near the depot to Union Street at around 9:30 on Saturday, the lower deck had a fully seated load with people standing meanwhile upstairs the number of people was in single digits.
That routing would remove the link to Union Square as there aren't any alternative stops, the council intend to make Guild Street buses only once the works to dual South College Street are completed so it should address the congestion issues. Additionally when Union Street was open to all traffic turning from Union Street on to Market Street was a nightmare, a lot of the time I would take Stagecoach buses 10 minutes alone just to get from St Nicholas Kirk to the bus station.
The 20 I believe used to operate Union St > Broad St > Gallowgate in both directions but it was changed to operate via Castle St/North West St only so it could serve Morrisons in only one direction traveling to Hillhead, very odd.
The previous routing was Union Street > Broad Street > Little John Street > West North Street, it has always served Morrisons towards Hillhead. The 20 was rerouted via Castle Street in 2017 when Broad Street was closed and was never reverted back.

In the latter years of that routing the 20 would operate on a 15 minute frequency with two buses and one minute layover at either end!

The 20 was extended from Marischal College to Scatterburn replacing the 13 in December 2010 but this was a highly unpopular move that was reversed a few months later, after this the routing of the 20 in the city centre became Gallowgate, Upper Kirkgate, Schoolhill, Union Terrace, Union Street, Broad Street, Little John Street & West North Street which is how it stayed for a number of years.

The 20 has been busy during the day since the free under 22 travel started. As I speak the 20 left Hillhead with a standing load at 930 a.m.

I'll update this list as more are delivered/registered.

The project timeline is as follows; this is subject to alteration.

31/03: Batch 1 (65101-6) delivered to Glasgow for trials
14/04: Batch 2 (65107-12) delivered to Aberdeen
21/04: Batch 3 (65113-18) delivered to Aberdeen
25/04: Batch 1 transferred from Glasgow to Aberdeen
28/04: Construction works at King Street Depot completed & all chargers live.
28/04: Batch 4 (65119-24) delivered to Aberdeen

The pre-delivery inspections of Batch 1 are being done by Caledonia while Batches 2, 3 and 4 are being done in Aberdeen. As such the later batches are only expected to briefly stopover at Glasgow to recharge.
How could you possibly know any of this for sure?

Not much work appears to be done at the depot for it to be live in a month, although 2 boxes which look to be the first chargers have now been delivered to the depot.

On the topic of the 20/13, as a student living in Hillhead the 13 is largely avoided by the majority of students. Most opt to wait the extra 15 minutes for the 20 as it is a direct route and a lot of the time gets us in at the same time. The only time I’ve ever seen full and standing 13 from Hillhead is during freshers and big events such as Halloween when a lot of people were heading out.

Whenever the 20 is single deck operated and especially on a Streetlite the load is quite significant at all times of the day and what they fail to do is try and put deckers on a Friday, this is a day when loads of students will be heading to the bus and train station to go home for the weekend yet sometimes we can be stuck with 2 Streetlites on the route which just don’t have the capacity at all.

I also made an observation that at the start of the university year in September hydrogen deckers appeared somewhat frequently on the 20 however now they are a rarity. Was this some sort of appeal to get the students to use the buses or just a coincidence.

In relation the the 1&2 in evenings, I frequently get the last bus of the night on King Street towards Union Street and almost every time it’s been operated by a Streetlite and is full and standing. Why are the deckers withdrawn at night? If they’re on the 20 they manage to stay on the route until the last bus leaves Hillhead at 11pm.

The decision was made a few years ago to swap over artics and deckers in the evening with single deckers from other routes due to fuel consumption.

Just to add to this: it's probably unfathomable to current students, but the old Student Union building there was enormous and always busy. You could wander in there any night of the week and plenty of stuff would be going on, helped by the fact that it was open to any students from the city (including RGU and Aberdeen College) and you could sign in several people as well. Theoretically you couldn't get in after a certain time (was it 7pm?) if you were underage, but...

They also had a very...ahem 'liberal' policy towards underage students drinking, and at one point, the university ID cards didn't include dates of birth, just a warning that the holder wasn't 18 until a certain date. The problem was that this was very easily removed with nail polish remover, but as it was explained to me by one heid bummer, it was intentional: they knew students were doing it, but they were turning a blind eye because they could look after students in the Union, but not if they were elsewhere.

I remember the 20 being packed throughout the day and evening as a result of all this. Hillhead had a bar, but it was unbelievably grotty, and I remember most folk would rather go to the Union. The Union itself had a ridiculous amount of facilities: I don't think I ever actually visited all the bars there, but it's hard to imagine now just how cheap it was, even when compared to other places. If you lived in Hillhead, you probably had a bus pass as well, so

I think Hillhead is a bit smaller these days as well? Then you've got the huge amount of city centre student accommodation that was built over the last 20 years, and you can see how the demand for the 20 isn't what it used to be.

I stayed in hillhead a few years ago (before the pandemic) and it wasn’t full (or even close to it seemingly). Official university halls were mostly undercut by student housing companies. I did use the 20 fairly regularly to go to and from the railway station but the low frequency (every 30 mins iirc) and slow timings (it would often park up on campus for 5 mins before carrying on) meant it was often quicker to get the 1/2 or Peterhead/Fraserburgh buses and walk from Kings Street to Hillhead

The timings are better now, it can take less than 20 minutes from Hillhead to the railway station depending on the driver.

Just saw one of the new Yutong E10s going up Union Street (photos attached below). Wasn’t able to catch its registration but looked like they’ve gone for the standard interior with the pink grab poles, was hoping they’d go for green like the newer hydrogens.

EDIT: Have just seen a further 2 head up Union street and one heading down onto Guild Street so 4 In total.

Those photos show SG23WUT and SG23WVC so they'll be from Batch 2 (65107-12). Surprised to see them in Aberdeen so soon, although 65101-6 were delivered to Glasgow a week ahead of schedule too.

I agree, such smart vehicles but the interior is a let down. I do find the choice of Kiel seats interesting though, i believe these may be the first FirstBus vehicles with them.

They're alright I suppose, but the insides are standard affair and the seats are particularly uncomfortable.

The photos attached are of Yutong E12 models for Aberdeen.

I assume these vehicles aren’t being fitted with any audio-visual announcements? Noticed there’s still an eclipse that attempts to make audio announcements.
