Firewood

I’ve recently finished refurbishing our wood-stove and various chimney issues are now resolved. We live in an area where it is permitted to burn properly dried and seasoned firewood for domestic purposes so I’ve started looking around for local suppliers.

Bit surprised at the price (although, given the cost of energy, maybe not!) - a local farm is offering a full load delivery (2 cubic metres) of cut, seasoned firewood for £175. I recall buying a full load a few years back that cost £90 - is this how much firewood costs these days?

Wondering what people would consider to be a reasonable price.

£110 a cube for hardwood, £90 for softwood, was what we paid last year.

Given Aberdeenshire has lost tens of millions of trees to storm damage, the price appears to have gone down. £60-£80 a cube for softwood appears to be the going rate now. But, again, I cannot overstate how many trees came down last winter.

As for it being dry, and fully seasoned, good luck!

Thank you - so £87 / cubic metre of seasoned hardwood is perhaps a reasonable price? Granted we haven’t had the loss of trees it sounds like you have!

Acquaintance of mine tours the local rural area in a pick up truck after it's been particularly windy, and reckons he provides a useful "service" in cutting up and clearing away fallen branches from off the middle of the carriageway!

Seems reasonable to me.

Had a discussion on this very point with some random cyclists earlier in the year. Real rural people (ie lived there many years) tend to be very resourceful, especially when it comes to not spending money!

I'd say so as I would happily pay that for hardwood. It does burn hotter than softwood, on average.

Seasoned hard wood is really expensive these days. I’ve got a chainsaw and if I see any wood that’s going begging I’ll chop it up and take it home in the van. Over the past couple of years I’ve had all the rafters and joists from a house that was being renovated and last year one of the neighbours had a dead tree of theirs fall into the farmers field next door. I rang the farmer up and he said to just help ourselves and but clear up any waste afterwards.

My friend Steve also has a good chainsaw and between us we had about 5 van loads each out of that one so it was well worth doing a day of hard work processing it.
The thing was so dead that much of it had just shattered when it hit the ground!
