Reports coming in from TPE stating that there's a fire on a train at Grindleford. This was initially reported as emergency services dealing with an incident. Northern and EMR are stating that this is a train fault between Sheffield and Stockport. I believe the train is 1R68 with units 158866 & 158783.

https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service-disruptions/grindleford-20241017/
Due to a fire on a train between Stockport and Sheffield some lines are blocked.
Impact
Train services running through these stations may be delayed or diverted. Disruption is expected until 16:15 17/10.
Customer Advice
Due to a fire on a train in the Grindleford area the line is currently blocked for services running between Manchester and Sheffield, delays can be expected.

The following alternative travel arrangements are currently in place:

On Northern between Sheffield and Leeds in both directions.
On alternative TransPennine Express services between Leeds and Manchester/Liverpool in both directions.
On Northern between Sheffield and Manchester/Liverpool in both directions once the line re-opens.
On East Midlands services between Sheffield and Liverpool in both directions once the line re-opens.

Arrangements have been made for TransPennine Express rail tickets to be accepted for these journeys.

Network Rail staff are on site investigating the problem.
Update 14:58: Service is now on the move from Grindleford.

Hope both units are okay - very decent old barges those 158s and the railway lost two already recently (well, one and a 159!)

0955 EMR service from Norwich headed to Liverpool Lime Street. Seems to have been terminated at Stockport running an hour down. If that's indeed the one and the train now needs inspecting / fixing, where might it go?

And something odd happened to the consequentially delayed 2S85 Sheffield - Picc, which terminated short at Ashburys due to a Train Crew issue & then continued ECS (5S85) to Piccadilly.
Looks like the crew must have been so short of hours as to be unable to do the last 5 minutes of the journey (and, I guess, get back to depot in time), and could get off Ashburys alowing a short walk to depot. Seems a relief driver could be found to take it in ECS once the passengers were de-trained, but no conductor. OK, that's speculation, but seems plausible given the location & actions. not fun for the passengers, but only a short wait for the next train to Picc. Must have been annoying when they were already so late and almost there!

Of course, a host of other delays & cancellations on the route as a result.

Looks like the failed 1R68 (both units) ran ECS to Nottingham as 5R68 actaully departing 1h15 later, and just now (1815) arriving NOT.

And other EM trains shenanigans too: 1R72 ex Norwich delayed then cancelled from Nottingham to Liverpool, 1Z72 replacing it from Nott'm to Man Picc, but then cancelled to Liverpool because it in turn was so late!
Feel for the passengers, that route does in my experience get quote a bit of delay & cancellation anyway. No fun on a day like this!

Could be as simple as it was running so late going back to Sheffield it terminated, shunted out the way (as no platform allocated at Manchester Piccadilly) and will form back workings later in the day.
I haven't been to Piccadilly in years is there still sidings next to P1, could be put in there to save platform space.

Edit

195108 has just reappeared on the 1850 to Sheffield, formed of 5M74

So my guess of them removing it, from a Manchester-Sheffield-Manchester due to late running looks right.

Whatever's happening for whatever knock on reason users of all services through the Hope Valley are continuing to experience delayed and cancelled services until at least 22.00. That follows a poor day yesterday after flooding west of Manchester caused many cancellations.

Readers of this forum can understand how these things happen but it's hard explaining to passengers wondering if they'll catch their flight from Manchester Airport.

Saying there was a train fire isn't very reassuring when you spot the train lost 29 minutes between Totley Tunnel East and Grindleford - that's mostly in Totley Tunnel! The normal 4 minutes became 33.

Quite. Although around 30 mins there and the same after suggests it might well have happened exactly at Grindleford, just out of the tunnel, messing up timings.
It also isn't easy or that reassuring to explain that the fire suppression systems work pretty darn well these days, so much so that the units could continue to Stockport in service safely.
And i suppose the fact Totley is a very wet tunnel (like how could anything burn on there anyway) also isn't particularly reassuring...

It isn't the first time a train has been reported to have had a fire in the tunnel. It was quite a few years ago and it probably wasn't too serious but the train was stopped in the tunnel for what seemed like ages to those on the train. It would be a long way to walk out and get off the track if that became necessary for a member of train crew. To Grindleford station to the west or possibly Dore station to the east now Totley Tunnel East box has gone.

Not the case. The set terminated at Ashburys, they kicked the passengers off, then both traincrew went empty stock into Manchester Piccadilly eastern spare which has no platform. The next service for that unit had been cancelled due to traincrew and they needed the unit out of the way due to shortage of platforms, so it looked like this went empty into the eastern spare siding, just atop platform one at Picc. Note the lack of a platform number on 5S85 at Piccadilly.

The fire system activated on a vehicle whilst the train was in the tunnel, some smoke was noted which apparently didn't enter the saloon and the train carried on to Grindleford station (as per design, the fire system won't immediately cause the train to stop) where the passengers were initially evacuated whilst the problem was investigated. The train was found to be able to continue to Stockport and both units were back in traffic this morning so hopefully it wasn't actually anything serious.

It doesn't even take a train fire to balls up the Hope Valley service, there are three stoppers in a row cancelled tonight.

But there's a bus replacement from Manchester at 19.50 - which will take about 3 hours to Sheffield! That'll be OK then?

The 21.48 is currently showing as 2 car.

That's a most helpful explanation giving reassurance to any who may be alarmed at the thought of being trapped in the tunnel aboard a blazing train.

They used to stack the trains in the days of 101s and 142s. That could mean juggling things around during disruption. Are class 195s allowed to Rose Hill?

They still do. But there are two platforms out of action at the moment.

195s are booked to Rose Hill regularly.
