Reports of a small fire on a unit stationed at Lincoln this morning -

Firefighters put out fire in train carriage in Lincoln

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue were called at the train station at 10.39am on Sunday, June 1.

Three crews from Lincoln North, South and Waddington attended the fire.

Along with a Network Rail team, they used one hose reel to cool and damp down the fire.

There was severe damage to a heater on the carriage where the fire started.

It’s believed the carriage was empty at the time of the fire.

No one was injured and train services in and out of Lincoln were not affected.

It is indeed 156470. It looks as if it was due to work 2T34 1105 to Newark North Gate, which, surprisingly, was the first train of the day from Lincoln; this seems a little late? 2T34 was scheduled to depart from Platform 1, which is where the unit is situated.

Hopefully no injuries and hoping the unit is back in service soon

Looks like the Webasto. I bet the fire was within the Webasto burner, it happens now and again and rarely causes any further damage.

I'd agree with you there. It'll probably be replaced with a spare and the damage cleaned up.

Almost not quite sure you'd wanting to be putting the Webasto heating on on a rather warm day like this though!

If the unit has been stabled then the Webasto will be used to preheat the engine before starting it up, a Webasto has more than one use on a train.

The webasto would fire automatically when the unit is started, and then enter its usual cycle once the engine coolant has reached 78C after starting. Normally the preheat function would only be used in cold conditions. On a 156 automatic frost protection should kick in at about 1.5C, firing the webasto.

Never really understood why the webasto units are enclosed on a 156 though, hardly makes dealing with a fire easy - two carriage-key budget locks and two chains to undo to get the compartment doors open.
