Yesterday around 4:30 PM a fire broke out in the Utrecht IECC relays room. Short while later the entire IECC was evacuated with Signallers, announcers and other staff leaving the building. Rail services around Utrecht were suspended (even today there will be no services) and many trains stranded in the open field... of which most were evacuated after it became clear that the fire caused such an enormous damage to the signalling and safety equipment that services were not to be resumed that day (yesterday evening). After a first inspection it became clear that this whole weekend rail services will not be possible via Utrecht's control area.
In the Netherlands there are just 13 large IECC like signal boxes, each controlling a significant part of the network. If one of the vital boxes like Amsterdam or Utrecht "fall over" it's a matter of hours before the whole Rail system in Holland is facing a severe delays due to the enormous High frequency timetable in the whole country.
