I can only assume this one's a bit bigger than the one that stopped trains to Gloucester earlier this week since apparently nothing's moving there and everything since has been diverted away. I'm on what appears to be the last train to have made it to Wales before everything kicked off.

Anyone know what's up? Box on fire? Collateral power failure?

External fire has caused damage to signalling cables in the Swindon Loco yard area.

Network Rail tweeted it's a lineside fire that has burnt out some signal cables.

This is going to be an ugly Friday evening.

I am travelling Gloucester to Paddington; advice so far is to travel to Bristol on the 1744 Westbury service and get on SWT or one of the few HSTs going.

Good luck with that! The last SWT service to Waterloo left at 15:51

The Swindon Advertiser has got a story up with some info:

http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/...engers_face_delays_following_fire_near_track/

Train passengers face delays following fire near track

RAIL passengers are facing delays during rush hour after a fire has spread to a signal cables between Cheney Manor and Stratton.

Fire crews were called to the small blaze at 2.47pm after it spread from a small patch of grass to the side of the line and damaged signal cables, resulting in delays.

Replacement bus services have been organised from Swindon and other key places along the line, but a spokesman for First Great Western admitted delays could possibly go one beyond rush hour this evening.

He said: “The problem with issues like this is that it may seem like a localised issue but it can quickly ramp up. Our crews can end up in the wrong place and this issue is likely to run into and past the rush hour tonight.”

A spokesman for Network Rail said: “It was an external fire that came on to the railway between Cheney Manor and B&Q, near the locomotive yard junction.

“The problem for the railway is that there has been damage to the signalling cabling and there will be extensive delays.

"Obviously we can only apologise but when we are without signalling we are very restricted in what we can move.”

This is going to be an ugly Friday evening.

Is there ever a day when the GWML isn't 'stuffed'? Yesterday was just as bad.

I had to go from Oxford to West Drayton (for a bus to Heathrow), I decided I'd travel on the direct all-shacks LTV 165 instead of the faster XC to Reading, then FGW HSS to Slough, then change to the local LTV to W. Drayton.

The local LTV to Paddington departed Oxford about 12' late due to no driver, then at Didcot we sat for another 15 mins to allow an XC, a few FGW HSS and two Freightliner container trains take priotity, get to Reading and we were then routed behind a poxy Class 7 stone train for the remainder of the way to W. Drayton! The driver had to apologise over the PA at Maindenhead for the sheer slow running of the train because we was chasing a freight train on single yellows. Arrived at W. Drayon about 35 mins late.

Despite the above, karma intervened, I was glad I never took the fast XC/FGW option because between Reading and Slough - regardless that my all-stations LTV was on the Up Relief behind a slower-than-the-slow-death stone train, an army of HSTs/180s passed on the Up Main which my LTV then passed all of them again at Burnham because of a block on the Up Main! Hare and the tortoise situation.

There is apparently a top of the hour service between Paddington and Bristol Temple M in both directions but not calling at Swindon or Didcot Parkway. Not quite sure where it goes in between...

Services are running between Bristol Parkway and Didcot Parkway with delays of around half an hour.

Tickets are being accepted on any reasonable FGW service with advance restrictions lifted, as well as on XC by any reasonable route.

Still no service between Swindon and Gloucester according to the guard on my train.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Said guard now announced just after leaving Swindon that the train would be non-stop to Reading. I am alone in coach G but I wager there may be some rather disenchanted people on the train who are now going to be overcarried...

He also announced that there was a cable theft incident.

I got snarled up in this too  20:15 to Swansea delayed by approximately 20 mins waiting for an available vehicle (Paddington was absolutely bereft of intercity stock after the previous Bristol left), then once one had arrived and all passengers had boarded it had developed a fault which couldn't be fixed, leaving us running for another train on plat 1.

Curiously though (and picture proof to follow) it seems the previously discussed Channel 5 documentary about FGW was being filmed today! They were videoing one particularly loud chap giving the duty station manager a hard time. I decided to stand close to the action so hopefully I might appear on film. They were also filming (without sound) for footage of an entire HST offloading and running to plat 1...!

I still need that bit! <D

I was going to do the down sleeper last Tuesday night just to scoop that bit in but thought that was a step too far.

Here they are filming the duty station station manager answering passenger queries. Sadly due to the number of people crowded around the departure boards I was unable to get a decent shot of the entire scene...

It's used a bit during winter weekends when the main GWML is possessed. I've done the other two sides too. A trip I thought might do it went via Parkway instead (though it did Non-stop Temple Meads on the through roads)

Try the 1706 Padd-Bristol M-F, runs via Newbury etc, said curve, Trowbridge, Bath. Bit more sensible than the sleeper....
