Fire breaks out at historic cliffside lift,

A fire has broke out at a historic cliffside lift.

Firefighters from Cleveland Fire Brigade are tackling the fire at Saltburn Cliff Lift, at Saltburn-by-the-Sea.

Smoke can be seen coming from the railway's building at the base of the cliff while the carriages remain at a standstill halfway up the cliff.

The fire service has warned the public to avoid the area and has sent three fire engines to the scene.

Presume this is the correct link to the BBC article...

Extracts...
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council confirmed that staff spotted smoke coming from the tramway when they opened the station at about 10:30 GMT.

No one was injured in the fire but the promenade has been closed.
The lift has been closed since 9 January for annual maintenance.

Best wishes to both those involved with the tramway and of course the firefighters on the ground :)

(Also, I can't help but think that the BBC article is really rather poor: one of the photograph captions is just "Smoke". I suppose I must be thankful it's correctly spelt.)

How old is it compared to other funiculars down that way?

Please can we call it the Saltburn Cliff Tramway rather than just “lift”. All recent official publications use tramway. Lift to me sums up a feature enclosed on four sides. The Saltburn tramway is the oldest water balanced operational tramway in the U.K.

It says on the front of the building LIFT

I was wondering how easy it might be to get a fire engine to the lower end, looks like they managed from the photos. Guess there’s a road down to it.

It’s a hundred yards from the car park at the bottom of the hill and the esplanade is wide enough for a fire engine to access it. The alternative route is steps or a very steep road that is infamous for Arriva buses tackling it really well in icy conditions whilst cars slide round.

Cheers. Not been there myself, but maybe one day.

Maybe, maybe not. Undoubtedly there'll be a fair bit of smoke damage occasioned that'll need sorting, but it doesn't look like everything's been razed to the ground.
Much to the council's disappointment. :s
Really? Is that Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council. If so, what's the back story? Does the council really want rid of what must be a major tourist attraction in the area, albeit possibly one that no longer fully pays its way &/or needs major refurbishment - maybe that's the issue?!

Unfortunately the damage does appear extensive and the lift will be closed through at least Easter but I suspect we'll be lucky to see it operating this year:

Fire damage to Saltburn Tramway “extensive.” No reopening date set. Plans for full rewire and a substantial refurbishment.

A fire caused by an electrical problem at the Tramway on January 16 led to serious damage to the electrical pump room and other internal fire damage and a full rewire will be needed.

Initially the Council said it was “too early to say” if the Tramway would re-open for Easter - but further inspections show the damage is such that it will definitely not reopen at that time. No reopening date has been set.

Cllr Carrie Richardson, Cabinet Member for Climate and Culture and Deputy leader, revealed more information about the extent of internal building damage including the electrical pump room. She said:

“We regret that damage caused by a major fire to the much-loved and hugely popular Saltburn Tramway is extensive with serious internal damage to the building and operating equipment, especially the electrical pump room.
“A full rewire will be needed along with careful restoration of this grade-listed structure. Our teams are continuing to work hard on a plan to make sure the Tramway reopens as soon as possible. However this is likely to take some time and, although we can’t put a date on reopening at this time, it will not be this Easter.

“We look forward to reopening the iconic tramway when it is restored to its full glory and ready for future generations to enjoy. We will continue to keep our residents and visitors informed.”

Saltburn Cliff Lift, which opened in 1884, is the oldest water-balanced funicular in the UK and the second oldest in the world. It was initially closed on 9 January for maintenance and the fire occurred on January 16.
