Anyone know what the rectangular structure at an angle within the ruins was? Lift shafts?
That's the burnt out shell of the LCD screen attached to the gable end of the building next door. It fell seconds before the union street frontage collapsed.

There's a video of it here.

I think it’s the frame of the advertising LED screen that was on the roof
Agree. It’s just the right size, and I saw a before and after comparison picture on the BBC site a few days ago that showed the same construction seemingly supported by the neighbouring buildings chimney stack. I guess that, (ie the chimney stack), might have to be checked for damage too…

I think everything adjacent to the fire will have to be checked for damage

Yes I probably should have said damage was even more likely, if the lattice structure was unsupported from below at some stage.

Re: the 156, I wonder if they're considering a curtailed service on the Thornliebank-EK branch. It's the only service that runs on that section so could potentially be relatively straightforward and they could at least get people from further out to the better bus links at Giffnock.

I'm not aware of any suitable turnbacks in the Thornliebank area that would allow this?

And just gone by in the other direction.
Maybe staff were bored and went out for a hurl...!

Joking aside, With Glasgow Central shut and vast majority of Strathclyde network south of the river not running, what's happening with train crews and other staff scheduled to work? Just remain at home on unexpected holidays, or are they all crammed into a mess room somewhere waiting to spring into action? 8-)

Then following on with no services which = loss of income - Although now publicly owned, would Scotrail / Network Rail have loss of income insurance, or would the tax payer be topping things up?

I'm curious - as I'm part of the business continuity team at my place of work in Glasgow City Centre and always look at these type of incidents with a "what if" hat on.

Traincrews booking on as normal at their depots - albeit Central crews are temporarily accommodated within the training academy for now.

As to be expected there is an increase in crews sitting about, but they are being utilised to work the limited services that are running in Ayrshire and Inverclyde.

Is there a blitz going on of outstanding vehicle repairs / cleaning / servicing? Seems a good time to catch up on any backlog

Unlikely. Maintenance is planned around mileage so the units that are due exams/Maintenance will be at the depots getting done as normal.

There may be an opportunity to do a few additional heavy cleans of units and that will be about it.

Given p10-p15 may be first to reopen, I assume an hourly service on core Scotrail routes (Ayr, Gourock, Neilston, Kilmarnock, Lanark) along with hourly Avanti using p10 or 11.

Would there be any need to keep other platforms closed? I think you'd need the circulation space in the concours rather than just the area at p10-15 and that will let you use the lower down platforms.

Keeping train movements (and associated vibration) further away from the affected area?

Lanark could run to Motherwell to connect with low level service.
I think we would see a limited through service for Avanti plus via Paisley routes to start.

It is possible - correct me if I am wrong - to route trains to P10/11 from the WCML, but are those platforms long enough to accommodate the pendolini?

10 (and 9) certainly is.

Not uncommon to see those used during disruption to take a Pendolino.

You can go all routes from all platforms at Glasgow Central.

390s will fit in 9, 10 and 11.

Amazing to think that it stayed open throughout the whole of world war 2, yet a fire at a vape shop closes it now

Quite so, although Glasgow's geographical position made it less vulnerable to the attentions of the Luftwaffe than almost any other large city in the UK
