FIP travel

So, I'm completely new to FIP travel but I'm looking to make a journey later this year between London and Portugal. Would anyone be so kind as to give me a beginner's outline as to how I actually book these discounted fares and seat reservations?

I've found bookmyrst.co.uk, is this the best option to use? How far in advance can you generally book? I'm looking to travel in October, but I'm guessing that's currently too far into the future to book?

If you do choose to book things on the day, as I have done many many times, it's worked out pretty cheap, and the ticket office staff have been most helpful. In France, SNCF booking office staff may struggle to locate the code for your FIP discount (75%) - it's CF77. In Spain and Portugal (50%, allegedly, usually charged far far less), never had a problem and despite rarely using coupons I've often accidentally been dumped unceremoniously in 1st.

Last summer I used FIP in Switzerland for 50% reduction. Many smaller stations are unmanned, with just a ticket machine. So I had wondered how I would get my FIP discount. Turned out that one just selects a 50% discounted ticket from the machine and then, if a ticket inspector calls, make sure you produce your ticket and FIP card. Happened a couple of times and the Swiss railway staff seemed perfectly aware and didn't have any problems.

Likewise in Denmark where again you are lucky to find an open booking office, a member of staff doing the rail replacement buses (yes it happens there too) showed me what to select on the ticket machine for my FIP discount.

You can select the 50% reduction for your FIP discount on the Swiss SSB website too if you want to get your ticket in advance. Conductor happy when I did this last month.

Being a "Retired Railway Officer Society Member" - it does no harm to post this very recent update for those working or retired - etc who have access to FIP facilities


Rail Staff Travel Office closed for the Duration of the Virus Crisis
Staff are working from home and can be contacted by e-mail


There are two specific implications for RROS members:

* Contact with RSTL can be by e-mail only (rst@raildeliverygroup.com)

* FIP coupons are unable to be issued (should anyone need one at present)
