FIP cards

I recently applied for my first ever FIP card, and at the same time some coupons for DB and SNCB. The coupons have arrived, but am I meant to receive a physical FIP card, like my Priv, as well? Or can I just use the coupons on their own?

I'm happy to be corrected but I believe the validating ID of the coupons is your passport and not your FIP card. So you should be ok.

FIP card should come soon. If you are unsure or a little nervous then I'd phone the staff line at ATOC.

I'm not so sure, whilst your passport will confirm your indentity, your FIP card confirms your ellegibility to FIP discounts and coupons. I'd rather have both with me when travelling. As suggested contact ATOC if it doesn't appear soon.

FIP coupons fine without a FIP card. As stated above your passport validates the coupon.

Did you apply for the fip card or the coupons? I can't remember if you're meant to do them separately or not.

You can apply for both the card at the same time. I would take the FIP card with you as I have been asked for that on board far more often than my passport.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I applied for them both simultaneously, the form says if you don't have one when you apply for coupons they'll automatically issue you with one. Might give them a ring tomorrow just in case.

Yeah make sure you take the letter explaining the 48hr rule in about 20 languages! I had some Dutch burts on the verge of filling the next box in a few months ago!

The rules are on the back of the FIP coupon. You don't need to have a FIP card when you travel, only a passport or identity card. However, one may sometimes be asked for the FIP card: this seems to have been a particular thing in Switzerland over the past 18 months, apparently to reduce fraud. But in principle, it is not needed.

I always have my FIP card with me even when I am using coupons. Although you do not need it to validate your coupons, if I'm asked to show it I will do so just to avoid any arguments in a foreign language.
