My Irish Rail FIP card is getting a bit scruffy, would it still be valid if it was laminated? I did ask Irish Rail and they said they didn't know.

If it doesn't need to be written on, stamped or swiped, I don't really see why not?
Though having never properly seen one, they may well be heat sensitive so obviously not something you'd want to risk losing if so!
Do you have any contacts at Translink? Maybe try asking them if so, stating that Irish Rail didn't know.
Personally speaking, and this absolutely is NOT advice, just a personal thought, part of me is thinking that the fact Irish Rail don't know means there isn't a rule that says you can't.

I would strongly advise against it. Anything that makes it more difficult to believe or establish that it is genuine is unlikely to work in your favour.
Can you post it back and ask for it to be reissued because of the wear?
( However, given the good value locals' tickets available nowadays in most countries I can't imagine anybody suspecting a scruffy card to be a potential fake!)
The card as shown on seat61 look like a old format paper 3 fold drivers license we had in France
Amazon still sell a ton of the plastic sleeves fitting that format with the folds and everything
