Can I use a fip card on the day at Basel HBF to gain discounted tickets?

how much is the discount? I want to go to Ausserberg, will it be valid?

Yes you can use an FIP card to buy tickets on the day, either from the ticket office or out of the ticket machine; the discount is 50%, select the "halbpreis" option on the ticket machine.

Last year I used a FIP card at Basel SBB to buy tickets to the Basel suburban station of Kaiseraugst, to visit the extensive Roman remains there.

As expected, it was no problem, but I was surprised to be asked to show our passports as well as our FIP cards by the Swiss clerk; I have never been asked to do this at any other booking office either before or since.

These are very nice. Far more comfortable than EW IV hauled coaches (which themselves are very good), with absolutely massive windows and nice wide 2+2 seats, and definitely better than the far too narrow seating and tiny windows of the double deck rubbish.

Also a curious form of pseudo-DOO - doors are driver controlled, but the guard gives the tip by waving at the driver.

I agree. First class is superb in the Lotschbergers. Benefit of the summit route is the splendid scenery, famous loops on the north ramp and the amazing view (of Visp as well as the rest of the Rhone valley from the south ramp, although you won't get it all as Ausserberg is roughly half way down the slope.

Incidentally I stayed in the hotel by the station some years ago. Serves the local village brew!

I think they were tightening up checks on FIP last year in Switzerland as I was asked for ID on a number of different occasions. Can't say what's happening this year.
