Finsbury Park ticket barriers

Hi all,

Just a quick question so I can help a relative with her Oyster: what's the current situation with ticket barriers at Finsbury Park? It was a hodgepodge of validators and barriers for a few years but I wondered if that's changing now that TfL are gating their part of the station.

Essentially, I'd just like to know what my relative can expect when she changes from NR (Hertford loop) to the Piccadilly line. The last I knew was it'd mean passing through barriers on the NR platform then a validator to join the tube, but with TfL's work I wondered if perhaps they've rearranged things yet so an interchange can take place within the gateline. Any up-to-date info gratefully received!

Changing from the national rail platforms to the tube via the spiral staircases means going out of the gateline at platform level, down the steps, touching a validator, then using the spiral stairs.

Or you can go out and back in via the tube entrance a bit further up and will need to use the gates. An advantage of that is not forgetting to tap back in as you might otherwise.

TfL apparently can't see any problem with that, as they don't believe fare evaders will use the spiral staircases to avoid touching in or out.

Are Platform 1 and 2 at Finsbury Park still ungated? There was no gateline there last time I used the station. They never installed one when they built the platforms. That would be the platforms a train coming in from the Hertford Loop would use.

No, no gates there either. Nice and easy to get off and on to the underground without a ticket.

Yep. Locals and regular passengers are well aware of this, only last night heard "we'll get off at Finsbury Park cos there's no barriers".

I realise there are site constraints, however this is one station I really wish would be fully and thoroughly gated - including interchange. This particular station has always been associated with more than its fair share of crime and anti-social behaviour.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'm surprised to learn that the barmy arrangement hasn't yet been changed, but perhaps I shouldn't be!
