Finnish engineering works in June

I'm planning a trip to Finland for next June.

Last time I went, the trains weren't bookable until fairly close to departure as it transpired there were engineering works on the mainline from Helsinki to Oulu, as well as north of there. The IC train I took was diverted via Kouvola so I got to take in an interesting alternative route, but I've not yet had the chance to travel on the mainline via Tampere.

I'm considering doing the line to Rovaniemi next June as part of my trip, and flying back from there, but don't want to fall into the same trap again. Is there any way of finding out whether there will be engineering works again, or is it only planned/published closer to the date?

I'm keen to book the flights before the prices go up too much (or redemption seats disappear), hence why I'm looking now. But obviously don't want to commit myself to returning from Rovaniemi if it's going to involve a long replacement bus.

Day trains are available to book up until 14 June 2026. If you can keep your trip before then, you have a lot of certainty of what’s available. Remember that things slow down a lot after Midsummer (20 June) so that’s likely when engineering projects might kick in.

The timetable change is on the 14th December, so planned works might start appearing there after that. I just spent some time hunting around Väylä/Finntraffic's webpages ... that was "fun", but turned up this from VR Logistics showing track works affecting freight. https://logistics.vr.fi/fi/vr-logistiikka/asiakkaan-opas/tietoa-ratatoista/

There are planned works around Oulu and up to Kemi starting next year, including track doubling south of and additional passing places north of Oulu. Specific dates aren't mentioned anywhere, but see VR's pages above and normally the use of replacement busses is noted in the timetables well in advance.

Helsinki-Oulu via Kouvola is quite a nice route anyway - pretty much ALL of Finland looks the same, though that route has more lakes to see. There are four trains each way per day that cover that whole route - takes about 8+ hours instead of 5h30-6h30 on the direct line. That route isn't a diversion but rather a different line altogether; engineering works on the main line to Oulu would have involved replacement busses.

related as plan on doing Sweden-Finland over the top, is there any word on the Boden-Haparanda line in April/May?, SJ indicate there may be some when trying to book but cant find any information on the track operators website

Just as a note, if you are planning to go from Hapanranda to Tornio by train, it is not yet confirmed that the cross-border services will start in December - most likely sometime next year. The best you can do at the moment is take a connecting bus from Haparanda-Tornio to Kemi. The only station in Tornio at the moment is Tornio-Itäinen whch just sees the night trains - the one that you would want is the 22h16 Tornio-Itäinen to Kemi.

The best you can do at the moment is take a connecting bus from Haparanda-Tornio to Kemi. yes i know this, wasnt assuming the cross boarder train will have started yet, plan was Train to Haparanda and then to hike/taxi across to Tornio-Itäinen as will have Quite a wait between the last Boden-Haparanda Train and the Kemi-Tornio-Helsinki Train

It’s a little too soon to know about the railway engineering works in Sweden. But Boden-Haparanda is mostly very new track, and it’s not heavily used. You’re probably more likely to experience planned disruptions on the busier and older lines Boden-Kiruna-Narvik (which carry the heavy iron ore trains) and Boden-Jörn-Vännäs.

And I’d say there’s a 50:50 chance passenger trains will be running Tornio-Haparanda by June. Fingers crossed.

Checking SJ and seems no offer of trains to haparanda after January 10th, strange that they are not offering this close to travel and not communicating why

Possibly related to the transition of Norrtåg’s operator from Vy to VR on 14th December. (SJ won’t communicate anything, they don’t operate the trains.)

The current timetable is here, and I don’t expect huge changes: it’s a single track line with constraints around other trains between Luleå and Boden so big changes are unlikely.
