fines on metrolink

I lost my ticket for the metro link after a night out at the end of august 16 inspector issued me with a standard fare fine £50 or £100 after 14 days. I lost this ticket , I received a letter yesterday saying that I was issued with the original ticket on the 30/12/16 and have 21 days to pay from date of letter.
With the date being wrong do I need to pay????

If you accept that you lost your ticket then the moral thing to do is pay up.

You did the "crime", pay the "fine".

I'm sure that if you advise them of the correct date they will be happy to send a letter with the correct date on it.

They may refer to a date of the ticket being re-sent to you, which has happened before.

A £50 'ticket' is a bargain compared to the train companies, where it's often £400 'real fine'+ court + conviction. Ring them up and pay it, get it done with.

After 21 days, it will go to Bury Magistrates, and as per the Manchester Evening News article, bailiffs do arrive at the door and you probably receive a conviction.

An alternative possibility is that the latest correspondence does not relate to a re-issue of the August fare demand but has been triggered by someone else wrongly giving the OP's details when that other person was found without a ticket on an occasion in December. The OP might want to check whether the latest correspondence has the same incident reference number as the earlier correspondence. If it is all about the August incident, I'd agree with the advice already given in this thread.

Unsurprisingly, this happens a lot, although should it proceed to court the (quite thorough) person description taken can be used to clarify the (actual) offender's appearance.
