Looking for support and answers please!

Original train to London was cancelled and was subsequently stranded. Needed to get down for meeting. Jumped on first train service that was available and running that day, which was to Birmingham. Arrived in Birmingham, purchased £13 Railcard single to London. Noticed that a quicker train was available, therefore getting me into London on time for my important work meeting. I was sat on an Avanti service, and not the West Midlands service that the ticket was purchased for. The difference in original pricing was £4. Now facing a charge of £240. Paid for ticket, but was in complete disarray and needing to desperately make it to London by hook or by crook.
Main questions are:
- does the 'admin fee' have to be paid?
- don't have the original penalty sheet
- not refusing to pay, just want a fair price reflection
- my original journey was cancelled, does sub section 28.2 have any weight in this instance?
"Where disruption prevents you from completing the journey for which your Ticket is valid and is being used, any Train Company will, where it reasonably can, provide
you with alternative means of travel to your destination, or if necessary, provide
overnight accommodation for you."

- £240 seems so steep for a genuinely honest mistake having been made

What have you already paid? Can you show us any documents you’ve been given? Make sure to redact personal details.

How is the £240 being demanded? By letter or e mail?
What does it say that it is for?. I doubt it is a ‘fine’ though I accept it will feel like one.

It would also help if you could answer the questions in the pinned post at the top of this part of the forum, where relevant, as that will help us check everything first for you.

Original train to London was cancelled
From where? Please tell us the date and time too.

Did you have a ticket for this train?

Arrived in Birmingham, purchased £13 Railcard single to London. Noticed that a quicker train was available, therefore getting me into London on time for my important work meeting. I was sat on an Avanti service, and not the West Midlands service that the ticket was purchased for. The difference in original pricing was £4.
Why did you not buy the Avanti ticket? Which Avanti train were you on? What time did it leave?

Now facing a charge of £240.
How did this happen? Did you refuse to pay for a new ticket on the Avanti train, leading to your details being taken?

None of this is relevant to your situation, this covers being stranded which means being unable to complete your journey on the same day, which isn't what happened in your case. There may be legislation which assists you but we need to know exactly what happened, when, and how all of this has materialised.

Your wording really suggests you did not have a ticket from the first station to Birmingham....but you might have. You seem to suggest that that train caused you to change your plans. If you then bought a cheap advance ticket for a specific London Midland train, then decided to catch the Avanti, I can understand the penalty.
