Just curious.......it's the 6.21p.m from Bristol Temple Meads to Cardiff service.

The thing is either half an hour late or arrives at 6.10p.m

Anyone know what the actual train is and why the extreme variances?

1821 BRI-CDF starts back at Taunton. Scheduled to arrive into Temple Meads at 1814.

I think the main problem for this service, is the very tight turn around at Taunton from its previous journey.

I've used both the outward and return services involved (15:00 CDF TAU/17:05 TAU CDF) and known the outward service to be late on a regular basis.

The 15:00 does have around 4 minutes of slack between Bridgwater and Taunton, which can give it a more than sufficient 9 minutes to turn around at Taunton when leaving Bridgwater on time, but it's usually slightly late.

Thanks both, my first night of commuting it turned up at around 6.11p.m and I (wrongly) assumed it's originating station was Temple Meads and that it had just rolled out of the sheds.

Subsequent experiences have led me to ask the question :D

I'm sure that there are other ways, but for future reference Deutsche Bahn can be your friend in finding origins and destinations of trains.

Stick in departure and arrival stations, say Bristol TM and Cardiff Central; departure time (say 18:00) and a date (today or future date).
Click search.
Next screen may ask for your age - stick in anything and click "refresh".
On the next screen, click on the arrow to the left of the train you are interested in (18:21 from BTM).
A more detailed description of the train appears. Click on the dash [for continental trains, the train number appears here] under "products" and a new window opens showing you the origin, destination and all calling points of the train.

I can't check right now, but if you use EastCoast's booking engine, I'm pretty sure it'll show you "train starts at" and "train continues to"

I use http://traintimes.org.uk to check times, and on that site if you click on the "stops/details" link under a service it tells you "CrossCountry service from Newcastle to Birmingham New Street" or whatever. That example is from http://traintimes.org.uk/shf/dby - one thing I like about that site is the way you can put the query into the URL, for easy bookmarking or simply to go straight to what you want without having to fill in a search form, for example http://traintimes.org.uk/edb/kgx/10:00/tomorrow.

It does show "train continues to" but not "train starts at". For example the detail for tomorrow's 1404 York - Edinburgh shows "Train continues to Inverness" but not that the train starts at London Kings X.
