Ha ha. I get you. I've just come off the back of a late shift on a Sunday so maybe I was unduly harsh. I was going to say 7.

Your post prompted me to watch Looper again, 7.0/10 is probably about right.

Incidentally what is it with Bruce Willis and numbers?

The Fifth Element
The Sixth Sense
Twelve Monkeys
16 Blocks

...and they're just the ones I've seen.

He was in the 28's at Pollsmoor Prison. Ha ha.

16 Blocks is a good film. Watched it a couple of months back.

Zoolander - I hadn't seen this for years and had forgotten how funny it is. Even if you don't like the humour you can have fun spotting all the celebs with walk-on parts or just being extras. 7.0/10

The Spirit - I like this as a spoof of the genre with a lot of humour, some slapstick, some subtle and Tom and Jerry violence. 6.5/10

Watched Warsaw 44 the other day about the Polish uprising in Warsaw in, you guessed it, 1944. Understandably quite dark but really good. Worth a watch to find out a tiny bit about something we rarely hear about.

Amazingly good or amazingly bad?

Strange Days - Crime/Sci-fi set in L.A. on 31st December 1999, not bad but a bit long at 140 minutes and I found the ending rather disappointing, I think the studio wanted a happy ending. 6.0/10

Strange Days was a good idea. What is the score with La La Land? What is it about, someone is really going to have to sell it to me.

Well, I gave it a 10/10, so it must be good ;)

Since you ask... ;)

First and foremost, La La Land is a musical. It's a modern musical. It's the first proper non-Disney musical there's been in yonks. If you don't like musicals, then you might not like this film.

The plot: an aspiring actor (Emma Stone) and jazz pianist (Ryan Gosling) meet in L.A. and fall in love. They both have big dreams that they are unable to make happen; Stone is working as a barista in the Warner Bros. lot and keeps being rejected from auditions, while Gosling is stuck in a job playing Christmas songs in a bar. When the two meet, they begin to realise these dreams - but will their relationship endure?

The songs are quite catchy, and the singing is above average here too. Stone and Gosling aren't Fred and Ginger, but then they're not meant to be. The acting is very good. If Emma Stone doesn't win Best Actress for La La Land, then the entire ceremony must be a sham. She is amazingly good. And Ryan Gosling grows on the viewer and plays off Stone well. This isn't their first film as romantic interests (Crazy, Stupid, Love with Steve Carell was), but they work very well together.

In short, La La Land is not afraid to dream, and deservedly so. This is something new, something that Hollywood has not seen before...and I love it. Whether you will obviously comes down to you yourself, so I'll stop here.

Thank you for the extensive review. Musicals are not normally my thing but I will certainly give it a go. I was surprised myself at how much I enjoyed Guys and Dolls when seeing my sister perform in it so I will not write it off as something I wouldn't like.

T 2 - Trainspotting 2

Wonderful sequel particularly for those of us old enough to remember the original.

Great performances from Macgregor, Carlyle, Bremner and Miller and a cameo from the author Irvine Welsh.

Plenty of nods to the original .

Only regret too little of Kelly Macdonald in person and in the flesh :p

10/10 !!

Carrie (1976) - This is supposed to be a classic horror, well I don't think so - it starts with soft core porn which is obviously there just for titilation, continues as a bog-standard high school story, there's slapstick (I think it's meant to be scary) with a fire hose at the prom, overlong attempts to build up tension complete with obligatory squeaky violins, intrusive "dramatic" music, the penultimate scene was just laughable and the final scene a cheap shocker. 3.0/10

Staten Island (aka Little New York) - Starring Vincent D'Onofrio, Ethan Hawke and Seymour Cassel it recounts the parallel but intertwined lives of a tree hugging crime boss, a septic tank cleaner with high aspirations for his child and a deaf mute butcher in a deli and how they tragically collide. Slow going but in the end it was worth it. 6.0/10

Well I remember seeing it at the Cinema and believe me there was an audible gasp at the end.

In the days before Videos and the Internet this was good stuff.

Incidentally the remake that came out a few years ago was pure dross and not a patch on the original.

That's the point of such scenes, it's just a film makers cheap trick. It doesn't scare, it startles.

Paul - My favourite Simon Pegg/Nick Frost film, even better than Shaun of the Dead, with those touching parting words from Paul the alien "I can feel your boner Clive". 8.5/10

The Bourne Supremacy - Probably the weakest of the three original movies, it's the one in the middle that you need to see to follow the entire storyline, but you can quickly move on to Ultimatum without too much afterthought. The attractive girl from Identity gets killed off annoyingly early and the assassin protagonist has zero character development, so we're left enjoying the usual epic chases and intricate subplots without much substance to the tale. 6/10

Holy Flying Circus - Set in 1979, the Monty Python team attempt to deal with the controversy surrounding "The Life of Brian". Brilliant performances from the actors portraying the members of Monty Python in this comedy with a message. In an inspired piece of casting Rufus Jones who plays Terry Jones (no relation) also plays Michael Palin's wife which provides some of the film's oddest moments. 8.0/10

La Heine is right up there as one of my favourite films.

Just watched The Girl On The Train. A brilliant film. Really well done, very difficult to work out what is going on early on in the film which I think is intended because Emily Blunt is meant to be an alcoholic. Also the other two main female characters are both blonde and look similar.

Let the Right One In - Bugger me that's a good film, it turns the genre on its head. 8.0/10

The Hollywood remake (Let Me In) is good too and mostly true to the original but it's shame they missed out the scene with the cats.

Let The Right One In is amazing. Let Me In is good to but largely pointless and not quite as good as the original. It was made like a year later as well.

The Human Centipede (First Sequence) was on last night on the Horror Channel so we watched it.

Don't look it up, don't watch it and yes, we deserve what we get for watching a film on that channel*. 0/10

* Turns out Duel was on there this evening and is one of the greatest films of all time. Seems the channel does have a little bit of good taste.

I remember seeing one of them, possibly the second one because it had am overweight man referencing to one of the previous films. It is rather disgusting but quite interesting

Recently I have been watching James bond but yesterday I watched Carry on Screaming which is a low budget film and rather daft but funny

AGES since i have been on here as I am not living at home right now:

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Decent enough SCIFI driven Harry Potter spin off that seemed weak on story and character development/depth. Why was Eddie Redmayne ( perhaps wasted in this thin role?) interested in herding these beasts? Where did they come from? Why? etc Clearly as set up to a franchise which will hopefully develop. Enjoyable if middling.

I assume you're referring to the Duel of 1971, Steven Spielberg's full-length film directing debut? If so, I echo 'the one of the greatest films of all time' sentiment. One of my top 10 all-time favorite films. That Peterbilt 281 tanker is one of the most menacing vehicles ever to appear on the silver screen. Really need to give it another watch soon...
