Filming Locations (North East)

Hi There

1st of all if this is in the wrong section, my apologies I didn't really know where to post... mods please move to the correct section.


Is anyone able to tell me, the best place to film operating trains (freight preferable) in the North East / Teesside area.

I've already got the Ribblehead down as a trip for next week (although not quite North East granted)

Somewhere, where I can get close to the line side (Legally) and Safe, as in I will not get bothered by the great unwashed so to speak.

Hett Mill level crossing on the ECML has some freight going through, as well as high speed passenger traffic. Very quiet and remote. There'll be places along the Durham Coast line too where you can fillm trains, although I don't know how much freight goes up there.

There is a guy I follow on Train Siding who goes around the North East area to lineside locations. One particular place he seems to get a good amount of freight photographed from is 'Plawsworth'. Its a great setting and his pics are fantastic but they are taken at a distance - not sure if this is by choice or if it is impossible to get right next to the line as he is clearly surrounded by fields. I don't know the area myself but thought I'd at least give you the name as you may know of it and be able to decide yourself

You could try Smithy Lane in Lamesley - a road bridge over the tracks at the end of Tyne Yard:

You can phot stuff in and out of the yard and on the mainline.

Wharton Park in Durham offers good views over the viaduct, though not particularly close.
I'm not sure if you can still get into the DLI Museum grounds now the museum is closed, but if so there are some spots next to the track.
There's a footbridge over the line at the end of Cross Street in Sunderland Bridge village to the south of Durham. That won't be at all busy. There's another one off Hett Lane to the south, look on Google Earth. That one has a nice spot to park the car and will be deserted.
Not sure if the site of Relly Mill Junction will work, the closed routes are now cycle/bike paths but there are lots of trees and bushes in the way.
