Hi!

Now that the Levenmouth Rail Link has reopened to passengers I thought I'd share this video of the DMU passenger service before it closed between Leven and St. Andrews in 1966, complete with Sc Region Running–In Boards, Totem Signs and Genuine Sc Region B.R. Enamelled Station Signs and Signalbox Nameplates, sadly all gone now!

Can anyone identify what the title/artist of the background compilation/medley is please? – I think it goes really well with the DMU as it arrives and departs from the stations and I'd like to obtain a complete copy of it!

Ah!

. . .I didn't notice that – I can look for that now!

. . .On another note tho', was the Sc Region the most consistent in resigning stations to British Railways standards with Regional Coloured Running In Boards, Totem Signs, Regional Coloured Station Signage and Signalbox Nameplates?, "all in one go as it were?"

. . .On the North Eastern Region for example, you might have got a Tangerine painted Running–In Board but in most cases that was your lot – I've not seen any N.E. Region videos in colour with Tangerine Signage well to the fore – if there any covering other regions please provide a pointer – I'd love to see an Ultramarine Blue E.R. one for example!

. . .To take another example, on the L.M. Region, was it only Silloth and Carlisle got Regional Maroon L.M.R. signage on the closed N.B.R. Silloth Branch?

Also, was it only the Sc. R that routinely replaced signalbox nameplates with light blue ones?

. . .Most signalboxes elsewhere seemed to retain pre–nationalisation nameboards!

Up the creek
It should be noted that the song is ‘The Ball of Kirriemuir’. There are numerous versions around as it seems to have been one of those songs that people just added verses to as and when; it was popular in the army. I should warn that many versions are utterly, irredeemably and gloriously obscene. There is even one by Kenneth McKellar which really is ‘as you have never heard him before’. All those maiden aunts in Crawford‘s would have gone into shock if they realised it was him singing that.

On GWR boxes, the white on black cast iron plates went further than merely naming the location, by including the words "'SIGNAL BOX" or "GROUND FRAME" as appropriate. There would appear not to have been an option to replace these within the BR corporate style standards. I doubt many tears were shed at Paddington over this!
