My friend visited me today in Cowdenbeath and got a single ticket from Edinburgh, we then got a bus to Kirkcaldy and he is going back by train tonight from Kirkcaldy to Edinburgh. I told him he should have just paid for a return ticket from Edinburgh to Kirkcaldy and got off at Cowdenbeath on outward journey (and potentially used it later to travel to Kirkcaldy) but it didn't seem to think this is allowed anymore. Can someone clarify please.

You are asking if Edinburgh to Kirkcaldy is valid via Cowdenbeath?

The answer is no, due to the following negative 'easement':
  • Easement 600034 (published by TOC SR)
Customers travelling from Dalmeny to Dalgety Bay, Aberdour, Burntisland, Kinghorn and Kirkcaldy may not travel via Glenrothes. This easement applies in both directions.

I would have said that I think a ticket to Glenrothes-with-Thornton would be valid for the above, but I'm not sure now as there aren't any trains from Kirkcaldy to Glenrothes any more so it might not be.
