I'm not sure whether it has been officially launched yet - it does work, I have used it, however not all sets are fitted, which leads me to question whether it is fully up and running. As a result, as far I see, it has not yet been launched with a fanfare, although FGW are happy to say that on some trains it is available and will be increasingly so.

I'm not very technical, so i'm wondering whether in some cases the equipment is there but no actual wi-fi signal.

I caught 'First Wi-Fi' or something flash up on my iPhone whilst at Bristol TM the other week. Pretty sure it wasn't the station Wi-Fi as that's managed by The Cloud.

it is based on the train because it is connectible in normally dead spots. some will allocate me an address using dhcp and some won't.

i suppose FGW will get upset if i accidentally break in to it :)

It is being fitted in the HST fleet but not being publicised at the moment until there are more sets fitted. Officially, it's still only available on the five 180s, which have notices inside the coaches. The network is called FGW Wifi

The equipment is being fitted currently, however until it is fitted throughout it won't be officially launched. This is because coaches are constantly being swapped around, far more than usual at the moment with the current work to refit or refurbish all of the First Class vehicles, and if a non-fitted vehicle is marshalled it obviously won't offer wifi. In many cases the kit is fitted and switched on, but doesn't work beyond Coach A. It's well worth popping into A and seeing if you can pick it up in there (the main components are in that coach).
