Hi all

Having difficulty tracking which units are where in FGW land, so does anyone have a definitive list of the current (or final after reshuffling) DMU fleet with FGWs western division?

Thats the Cardiff - Pompey diagrams buggered for a few weeks.

Actually, no...its all our other diagrams buggered, as when 798 isn't available for service, Control demand two 158s for the diagram instead, totally restricting our resources.

They're just becoming a joke if they have! This means 153s etc... on Portsmouth-Cardiff I don't think people will be too happy!
I must say i do like the new livery though... 158798 is going to look fab!

They have got rid of some 158s yes, but there still plenty for the Portsmouth - Cardiff.

However - Pacers are not allowed on the third rail, so that's that out. And I believe 153s are not cleared through Southampton tunnel unless that has changed recently.

That's only 19, not 21. You omitted '747 and '751 that make up the correct total of 21.

158747/751 remain with FGW and were omitted from the list given above. 158815-817/864-872 are now with Northern, EMT or Scotrail.

As Tom said, 142s/143s aren't allowed east of Romsey. I believe 153s are allowed all the way to Portsmouth, but its very rare that this happens. Usually if a 158 is unavailable, a 150 will substitute. The 153s are generally kept to Devon/Cornwall?

158747 and 158751 are still in FGW fleet..omitted them..my bad,

Don't know about 150248, but it should come back into service via SPM for inspection & completion of any outstanding work.

The 150 program is already heavy delayed though.

158771 is also back from refurbishment.

But with orignal seats not Richmond seats, however 762 came back with Richmond Seats, so will there still be 2 types?

For those of us from t'other end of country, why is 798 such a wonder-unit?

It's the only 3 car. Just to give you a quick history lesson - Wessex ran nearly all Portsmouth-Cardiff with 3 car 158's - but FGW took them apart!

They were semi-permanently 3-car units, splitting one unit, then putting each driving car with another unit, & locking the middle cab out of use. They were 158/9s if I recall, 158961-968, though not to be confused with the normal 158/9s leased by West Yorkshire PTE. Same as Central Trains used to do with some of their 150s in the past, using a 150/2 car in-between a 150/1 unit.

CT also did it with some of their 158s as well. Called them 'hybrids'.

I personally think that FGW should make another two 3-car 158s from..say..158747, 48 and 49 (the most non-standard of the remaining leased units).
