I'm planning to do a Freedom of Devon and Cornwall 8 in 15 Day Rover in June, combined with a Coventry-Tiverton Parkway return (specifically, a Super Off-Peak Return route Reading Not London). If I wanted to upgrade to First Class between Reading and Bodmin Parkway on a Saturday, is a Weekend First upgrade possible on that combination of tickets? Specifically:

a) Can Weekend First be purchased for a journey made with a Rover/Ranger ticket?
b) Can one Weekend First be purchased for a journey made with two tickets, or do you have to split the Weekend First as well?
c) If the answer to b) is that you have to split, how would that work with 19c splits where the train is not required to stop?! :p

(I mainly care about FGW's Weekend First, but if the rules are different for different TOCs that would also be interesting.)

Thanks in advance for any help. :)

Looking at their website, I think you only need to purchase one upgrade for your entire journey, which for Reading to Bodmin Parkway is £20.

The train does not have to stop at Tiverton. I see no reason why you cannot upgrade with a Rover ticket.

We do have FGW staff on this forum who will be able to confirm this. I will be surprised if you need to purchase separate supplements.

"It is available in conjunction with all Standard Class tickets and passes."

Presumably the tickets have to be valid for the journey ( ;) ), but I think that sentence on the website linked above would confirm it!

The supplement should be sold for the total journey you are holding valid tickets for - show them all.

With rovers, it's a bit difficult, but I would say you need a different upgrade for your outward and return, if you were doubling back the upgrade would no longer be valid, as you would then be going in the direction from y to x, and the upgrade would only be valid from x to y.

Many thanks for the help - I'm only considering upgrading for the long journey to and from Cornwall, so (if I decide I want to upgrade) I'll just get an upgrade from Reading to Bodmin Parkway, and not worry about the rest of the journeys, thus avoiding any doubling-back issues.

Ask for it to your furthest destination, it'll be the same price (although only the HST's will have 1st class in that neck of the woods).
