Forgive me if this has been asked before

Do FGW recruit for trainees mostly on suburban work or do they recruit for intercity work too?

You will initially train on the 'commuter' types at first, such as the 165/166 'Thames Turbo'; the exact traction will depend on the depot which you end up in and the type(s) they operate.

You will likely train on the Type 43 as you progress to higher links.

FGW high speed is effectively a different company to the ex Thames trains and also the West side depots, the only crossover is that the West high speed depots also sign units.

FGW is effectively 3 different companies which have retained their own sets of pay and conditions under one name.

You will start on the units and can put in for a transfer to high speed work and join the back of a very long queue.

I work for FGW and it really isn't run like 3 different companies?? TM's sign HST's and Units, some Conductors are now "cross cover" and work HST's occasionally and get the enhanced rate when they do, some West drivers also now sign HST's for cross cover at Gloucester currently and soon everywhere. RPI's/ATE's work all types of traction and at all stations and at mixed depots where there are different grades of driver or guard they are managed by the same managers.

Whilst there is a lot of integration, FGW still is very clearly made up of 3 divisions; LTV, West and HSS. All 3 have their own terms and conditions as well as a separate 'control'.
