Presumably it tells you soon after you sumit whether you make it to shortlist.

Not at all. The only way you'll find out instantly is if you answer one of the 'make or break' questions incorrectly*.. for example the question which asks if you take issue with wearing a uniform.

Some of the shortlisting, at least, is done by a line manager relevant to the job at hand and this can take months.

When I was applying for vacancies; I found it useful to type all my answers into a word processing program (MS Word/Pages/Note Pad etc.) before copying and pasting on to the web application-form to prevent the session from 'timing-out'

It is also useful to save these questions and answers in-case you want to re-use them when applying to another TOC.

The term 'incorrectly' could be subjective to each particular candidate.

I see your point however, so in the future will refrain from any extended explanations of words that already conveyed the point intended.

i did consider making a new account up, but i dare say that things like identical NI numbers would make them twig. I'm just fuming that even though with FCC I went through to the medical stage for trainee driver they won't even let me apply for this role!!

Hi All,

I completed my application today and was successful with the submit. However this is not before losing all my text the first time around on Sunday after 2+ hours (I was fuming) after saving to draft.
I also experienced not being able to progress with the questionnaire today, but to be honest I have put this down to a website which is not very well designed (software wise) and perhaps struggles when more than 1 person is trying to use it rather than automatic screening?

Perhaps this is all a cunning test and they are testing your patience skills! It wouldn't surprise me if FGW look on these forums to view what applicants say about the position

Is it just me or has the information about the job been amended on the website? Seems to have been made a bit more accurate (ie lost the South Wales and West description).

I notice that they say some of the training might be residential ie. live away from home. Does anyone what that means in practice - is it the odd week away or months away from home? Only asking as I have a young family and so if it's the later it will require some thought about how that might work!

I have submitted the application on this attempt. What a relief. I have saved the questions so I can continually adjust them in the likely outcome I don't get through this one.

Let's be honest chances are slim, for anyone.

I have applied for the Glasgow vacancy, just finished it all now, quite different to the other rail companies, they ask a lot more questions that seem more relevant to the job.

Would love it if I got it and would be willing to relocate, hopefully not as many people have applied for it, anyone else applied on here?

It now says application withdrawn so hopefully I have got away with it.

Im closest to oxford but said i would be willing to relocate to one of the other towns.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but if it's been rejected, then no amount of withdrawals is going to make a difference. I think you've confused yourself just a tad. Being rejected at the selection stage does not count towards any amount of times you can apply for a trainee driver position.

However the computer system they have will note that a rejection has taken place and the withdrawal will not make a difference to this. So any similar role will be a 6 month wait, though it's a tad annoying that a computer decides it before any HR member looks at it.

My post is really only referring to how First operate their system. I don't know about other TOC's as such.

With First you will have to wait 6 months for any similar role. Doesn't stop you from applying to other TOC's for this sort of role.

Their six month rule has nothing whatsoever to do with the OPC / Group Standards testing rules. Just FirstGroup and Southern Railway have now started making these rules up as they go.

They'll pick you up on your National Insurance number if you had to enter it.

Would this affect my southern guard app ie failing on the app means a 6 month wait or fail by defaut? also, which other jobs might I be restricted from applying that are similar to conductor? Does this include gate line?

If you get rejected by First at the initial application stage and it says try again in 6months. It wont affect your application with Southern AFAIK

no only FirstGroup jobs would be prohibited for 6 months. Southern are a different TOC. Remember the 6 month thing in this case is a FIRST rule not an industry wide. Think some people might be getting this confused with the 3 strikes rule for driver assessments which is NATIONwide!

Do they remember what candidates looked like on the day they last attended assessment... are there any preconceptions when deciding if someone will be successful and make it to assessment a second time round?

Are they still impartial? They must be looking for something when they ask you to give more details about why you failed but perhaps it is more for their records

It looks like first have managed to get around to shortlisting for this job at reading ,oxford and paddington,got my no thank you email today.
