Has anyone applied for these roles with FGW?

My Mother has for Plymouth HSS.

The only thing going against her is her age I suspect, but has extensive customer service experience.

My Dad's partner has applied for Virgin as a CSA- I think she would be superb in that role...

They have extended closing date for FGW roles

There is one thing to remember you HAVE to have cash handling experience for this role, First Scotrail are the same.

I was in the midst of transferring to Plymouth for a new job as a Train Manager within the same parent company but couldn't go ahead with it when the management told me I needed the experience.

How formal does this need to be? In Sixth Form were sometimes asked to help out with charging students for their school dinners if staff are short.

For the record, she is 46, so plenty of time left yet.

You cant drive a car legally until you are 18 so that is ageist.
You cant ride a scooter until you are 16 so that is ageist.
You cant buy alcohol until you are 18 so that is ageist.

I agree but many people who are approaching 60 will have and want to work past the age of retirement. I'm in my 60's and had 30 years customer service experience with BA, but hand on heart I know I wouldn't get a job because of my age.

Maybe B&Q have the right idea employing old pharts.

I imagine a lot of them will, especially via the local Conductors and Retail staff wanting to move up the ladder.

However by law, First still have to advertise the job externally, and interview a selection of applicants.

Most will be internal staff, but a few exceptional external applicants will probably also get taken on, especially if they have extensive Customer Service, Cash Handling experience and have previously worked in a Safety Critical role

part of my old job I used to do was transporting cash from the car park office to the local bank branch, that's handling cash but was told it didn't count.

Think what they're looking for is someone from retail who's actually got 2 years or more or using a till hence the cash handling experience.

That's what FSR and FGW told me, you HAVE to have a minimum of 2 years of handling cash if not then don't apply even if they're going to train you :roll:

I have applied for a FGW Train manager, After 5 years working on a 5 star cruise ship as a Receptionist, being a Receptionist over the last 14 years which includes cash handling , I still got turned down for the job. They have re advised on the FGW website to. I have asked for feedback nothing is given.

James, which ships were you on? I did 18 months with Cunard on all three of the current fleet.

My mum has had an email through today for this, with an online assessment to complete. Anyone else who applied heard back?

I have just passed the online assessment and have now been sent practice material for the next stage which is held at an assessment centre. Certainly testing by the look of the examples sent!

It's not designed to be easy.

My mum has also got the materials. It's designed to put you under pressure, however, you don't have to ask all the questions in order to pass, but you should answer as many as you can correctly.

With the 4 questions in 6 minutes example. Instead of reading the situation text first, see what the question is asking for first, then look for the answer. This will save you a lot of time.
