I saw it skulk through Twyford platform 4 at about 7:40- 57604 was dead in tow- must have disgraced itself. No sign of the stock at Paddington at 8:20 though- where did it go??

57603 is at Brush, which means 100% Availability needed, failures and hire-ins will occur :)

Well, This is the reason why Brains is on short term hire...Same will happen when 604 goes for refurb and re-livery...

As for where did the stock go? straight into OOC... no need to run it into paddington if its failed...

Didn't know OOC had access directly from the west- you learn someting new every day :)

I've often wondered though why FGW don't acquire some of those spare DVTs and stick them on the end of the sleepers- OK I guess a bit of modification would be needed for them to work with the 57s, but it would halve the amount of locos needed.

Or stick DVTs on and lease 67s- go for the full WSMR-style modification to stock and locos

I saw Virgin 57309 at Paddington on the morning of 5th September. What i never understand is that the 47's are still reliable whereas the converted 57/6's are failing.

Needing 100% availability will make failures more known. Because there was a lot of duffs about, if one failed, another came out and no one, except a few, are none the wiser!

But when a 57/6 fails you know about it as there is a higher-in etc etc.

I think it's stupid that FGW have to have 100% availability, trains are inevitably going to fail sometimes!! I don't think they've thought this through....

If you read the thread completely, it said Its only for the moment while 57603 is at Brush

the reliability of the locos are some what up and down i saw 3 loco,s in old oak this morn.

getting into old oak requires a run round in kensal green unless loco each end. There is a emergency arrival which involves going through the Heathrow express sidings which is not used very often.Everything arrives from the east of old oak (paddington end)

Today when walking back from a nightclub in Exeter at about 01:30 I saw the up sleeper pass from the opposite side of the road. I couldn't see the number but it was definitely one of the Virgin 57s.

1C99 Down Midnight involved in fatality near Totnes. Monday morning services to London thus up the creek.

Parlty becasue the 47's are the best part of nearly 50 years old...Which if you think about it, when they were built between 1963–1968 they had 2,750 bhp...later derated to 2,580 bhp...and still losing power ever since...

My point being the older the loco is, the less powerfull it becomes, and the less reliable it becomes...Hence the reason why Virgin wanted to replace there 47 hauled sets with the Voyagers, EWS with 67s, Frightliner with there 57s and FGW...

Afterall, look at all the main line 47 left now, how many of them are 100% totally reliable...

The main fauilts with the 57s are coming from the turbochargers amongst others things...

If you read the thread completely, it said Its only for the moment while 57603 is at Brush

Then of course 604 is due for overhaul next...
