FGW Sleeper on-board upgrades

i have a question for you all as i couldn't get an answer from FGW. i am booked on the sleeper from PLY to PAD tomorrow night, i have my seat booked but i have heard that you can upgrade to a sleeping cabin for £50 onboard is this true or just a tall tale. thanks in advance. sorry if its in the wrong thread.

If there are spare berths you can upgraded on board. I'm not sure of the price (though £50 sounds about right) however either see the guard or make your way to the buffet (who will get the guard for you). Be advised that it is not uncommon for all the berths to be sold however.

:cry: If you have an Advance ticket `The Manual`states you cannot upgrade to a berth. With walk up tickets £50 for a single cabin is the correct price.

It won't be the guard that upgrades the ticket but one of the sleeper hosts. If you make your way to the buffet they can advise of availability there. Boarding at Plymouth though you may be out of luck, spare berths quite often get sold through Cornwall.

:cry: If you have an Advance ticket 'The Manual'states you cannot upgrade to a berth.

There are similar daft rules with Weekend First on some TOCs.

But, in the real world, if there is availability, then most rail staff won't turn down a sale.

Same here a few years ago, he checked with the berth attendant that there was availability first. Though the standard allocation had sold out, and the 1st allocation had plenty of availability that wasn't going to get sold, the berth attendant was wanting me to pay the 1st class price, but the guard only charged me standard.

You will have to upgrade to the walkup fare first and then to the sleeper.

On-board Upgrades

Customers may upgrade from seated to sleeping accommodation onboard the train (subject to availability). This can be done on request to the Train Manager, or in the Sleeper Café. Sometimes, accommodation may become available during the course of the journey in the event of a customer ‘no show’.
Advance tickets for the seated accommodation cannot be used in conjunction with Sleeper supplements; these should be excessed to the cheapest available walk up ticket before a supplement can be sold.

Discretion may well be shown, especially if they have a lot of berths left.

But if this is a Friday night, that seems less likely.

Depends, you do have to be careful because if they show discretion by letting you upgrade without excessing the ticket, TOC managers might tell the staff off. (There are some despicable Basil Fawlty style managers who have used this forum to discipline staff for doing/saying anything that is considered too pro-customer:-x)
