Hey guys

After quite a wait I finally had an email through from FGW regarding the customer host job. I was hoping for an assessment or interview date. Instead they asked me to fill in a personality and calculation test online. I hadn't really heard about this before so I don't really know what to expect from filling these out...

I filled out the personality test no problem but I think the calculation test I have done terrible at. Is there a pass mark with these or will I definitely be invited to assessment after I have taken the tests. I'd find really hard to take to fail on the basis of a personality test and redicioulous (sp) hard sums and not get to impress them at interview. What experience have you guys had with these?

Thanks

Not sure about the calculation, however the personality there's no passed or fail either you have what it takes to do the job or not. Did you find they asked the same questions in a different context ?

Have you done the calculation test before? it was very difficult. Yeah I noticed that, they probably done that to catch you out. But what bearing has the personality test got, could they not take my application further due to the personality and calculation tests?

I did a personality test once and got the results - never got the job though - it plotted some kind of graph that showed what sort of environment you prefer to be in as well as how you work - ie in a team, on your own another one being if you are likely to give instruction or receive them. I've done a calculation test before but not railway related - can you rmember any of the questions for the calculations?

I didn't do too well on the maths test but was still invited for assessments and interview, I wouldn't worry too much, as I'm sure they have a bit of lenience with the online tests. Just make sure you do well in the real assessments, which are easier than the online one.

Ah right, I just hope that the personality test doesn't have that much of a bearing on me getting the job. The calculation test had some crazy questions, for eg. 35x3-34x?=435 something like that. What can I expect next if I have passed the calculation test?

I hope you're allowed to use a calculator!! That would be an almost impossible question without one: if I've done it right, 35x3=105, so taking 435 away from 105 is -330, and -330 divided by 34 gives an answer of -9.705882352941186 to the nearest 14 decimal places!

Yes you are allowed to use a calculator. The example I gave you was wrong, I didn't actually give a correct sum just an example of the type of questions you could be asked but as you can imagine, when you only have 16-20 seconds to do them you start panicking and struggle. Would rather an irate passenger in my face than solving a mathematical equation!

I thought as much about it being just a kind of example you had made up, I was just having a bit of a laugh buy trying to answer it, although I wasn't entirely sure! :p By the way, it took me about two minutes.

I did this messed up part four then did okay i think
. Hopefully like drivers reactions wont count against me... Was for a different role. They are easy you just need to practice first and be aware of basic rules eg to go from an outcome to an input you do the opposite so multiply becomes divide etc
