Evening all,

Quick query. I was surprised to see two First GW carriages / units on thwe back of low-loaders on the M5 on Thursday afternoon. The units were being taken south and I saw them on the M5 somewhere between J14 & J12 as I was heading North.

Anyone know where these were going? I am surprised they weren't moved by rail as an STP working.

Dave

Were they capable of being moved by rail?

Brake defects, excessive wheel flats, suspension problems etc will all make them unsuitable to be moved by rail!

I once had to plan a Light Electric move (Class 87 IIRC) Preston to Crewe with severe wheel flats.

15mph max on plain track, 5mph over points and crossings.

A lowloader would have been a blessing!

I've seen a thread somewhere about these when they were heading north. They've been somewhere for exams and they needed a low loader going north due to unavailability of drivers with appropriate route knowledge. (They normally borrowed a driver with route knowledge to accompany the driver with traction knowledge from a freight company but the freight company couldn't provide drivers)
