At Forest Gate at about 13.45, I saw a FGW 165 (or 166, I've forgotten ), heading towards Liverpool Street. It looked like it was empty...was he lost?

No, you've been asleep for 10 years, Crossrail has happened but they forgot to electrify the line.

I believe (but could be wrong) that it may have been to Ilford for something. IIRC before Aylesbury depot got a wheel lathe Chiltern's 165s went there, but it might not have been a wheel lathe, but something else.

Of course also some units were refurbished at Ilford, but I don't think that's still ongoing (certaintly not for CH).

Not unusual at all. There have been Networkers of all types in and out of the Bombardier shops at Ilford for ages. That unit will have been heading back towards Stratford, the NLL and home.

It'll be FCC next. There was a Cl365 in Ilford Yard this morning.

Judging by how rusty the brake discs were I'd have to say that I doubt it was a new arrival and more likely an imminent departure.

Interesting - does anyone know what routes these units are cleared for, given their non-standard loading gauge? I was under the impression that they were basically limited to the Great Western and Chiltern routes they were built for.

I couldn't tell you without my Sectional Appendix what restrictions they have for accessing Ilford, but I expect there will be some. It could be simple things like making sure the air suspension is inflated/deflated, removing the footsteps or just limiting the speed they can pass through certain stations to make sure they don't strike the platform edges.

365 moves to ilford from hornsey, iirc the steps have to be removed, and the unit dragged by a 317.

Is that right? Why the need for a drag? Why couldn't the unit go under it's own steam? There are no power supply problems along the NLL and GEML, and the Cl365 I saw at Ilford this week was out in the yard with it's pan up (though this in itself may be meaningless)

I'm going to dig out my sectional appendix and check this now. You've got me intrigued.

on ukmodern emu someone says that:

The 365s are not electrically cleared on the GE so have to be hauled. It
has
always been a 317. They are worked by First GBRf drivers.

They also have to have the passenger door footsteps removed as these may
hit
platform edges. Special clearance has been issued by NR to allow them to
move under the same conditions Shepreth Branch Jn - Stratford.

hope that helps O L LEIGH

Hmm. I'm going to check that.

I can't see what problems a Cl365 is likely to cause/encounter when there are Cl357's and Cl360's beating up and down the GEML without problems day in and day out.

Interesting.

I understand the need to remove the steps and shoegear (not that FCC Cl365's have shoegear), but I wonder what's wrong with the pans that requires them to be locked down.
