Hi guys and girls,

I have an interview with FGW coming up and I've got the whole sweating and stammering down to a T, but what has thrown me is that it also states that we shall start off with a group discussion.

I've never done one before so is there anybody that can shed a bit more light on this please? I kind of gathered that it doesn't involve sitting in a circle drinking tea and eating biscuits whilst talking about the latest episode of Hollyoaks.

Is it sort of like a team building exercises or a general talk of how much do you know about the company?

As far as I'm aware it's a type of discussion where you're given some information e.g. you work in a hotel and due to system error the hotel is overbooked, you only have 2 rooms left and 8 people waiting for their rooms and you have to decide who is going to have their rooms and discuss it with your group. Does that make sense?

Anyway did you have your phone interview? I'd really like to know some more about that, what questions they asked?

Hi LittleMi,

Cheers for that. I've been googling group discussions and I'm still none the wiser, but your response has helped clear up a few things.

I did have my telephone interview a few weeks back. They asked me 3 competency based questions. I was to give examples where...

  • Where you have performed a task where safety is an issue.
  • Worked as part of a team to help each other acheive the same result.
  • Persuaded someone in to doing something.

The last one I'm kind of fuzzy on.Also don't be put off if they start asking you questions such as "and how did you do that" or " and how did they respond". These are probing questions and they are only trying to get you to say the things they want to hear.

Also it doesn't hurt looking at other competency questions to help you prepare.

  • Where you had to deal with a rude and difficult customer.
  • Where you have used effective communication.
  • Where you have had to concentrate for long periods of time.

From expetience these are all very common questions which i have come across in many applications from other TOCs to even the Police! Remember to use the STAR approach.

And all the best.
