FGW HST To Brighton/Hove?

Just wondering if anyone knows whether it would be possible to run a FGW HST to Brighton/Hove or are they out of gauge? Recently there has been a few FGW HST workings down to Fratton in connection with Pompey v.s Swansea football matches (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73TvHj6Ciac) ....so that makes me ask whether it would be possible to do the same when Brighton & Hove Albion are playing teams in FGW territoy? The new Falmer stadium being only a short distance away.

If I can remember correctly a special working like this from Hove to Cardiff ran back in 2004, with 66249.

I believe you have to make special modifications to restrict the play on the Mark 3s suspensions to ensure they remain in gauge but that might just be something my father said once upon a time.

I always thought that the 'short links' units employed on the cross-country trains to Southampton (and Poole?) were required as there was concern over fouling of the third rail at Northam JUnction's notoriously sharp bend. I am pretty certain that there was concern at that point over underfloor equipment fouling the third rail. Unless there is concern that there could be a problem entering Brighton from the coast line surely there should not be a problem?

It'd have to be SSL (Short Swing Link) bogied sets only as LSL (Long Swing Link) bogies are banned from 3rd-rail lines, as we saw over Christmas with the diversions into Waterloo.

It was so nice to see & hear HST's go past my house towards Waterloo :)

There will be a HST to Fratton this weekend, going through to PMH on the CLPG rail tour.

CLPG is the Cotswold Line Promotion Group :)

Pilotmen needed for driver(s) and guard (s) as well...

edited to add: Do you think that enough tickets could be sold? If so, find out what price a charter for a Sunday would be, I'd be happy to work it (with pilotman). I'll do anything for a shift on a Sunday!

...except the football specials!! (casts mind back to the "other" forum!) :D

On principle, I'd have thought that FGW would be happy to send down an HST if the demand were there. As well as Fratton we will see HST sets running to Weymouth (probably!) for the Olympics next year; the management are becoming increasingly brave and daring with their most prized possessions! All I would say is watch this space!
