Just read about FGW running a special railtour from London to the Bristol Area using a HST. Trains is to run to Reading then to Westbury & onwards to Swindon before heading to Bristol Parkway and down the freight only line to Avonmouth before going to Portbury & Bristol TM.

Aprantly FGW are to split 2 hst sets so that the most of the carriages on the hst are to be first class.

tour is on the 25th september, some timings are in the latest issue of Modern Railways.

I cant see the point of a HST railtour unless the whole set composes of unrefurbished MK3s and a HST with a valenta engine.

John Farrow built a highly successful railtour business partly through running a series of over 130 HST railtours (marketed as "125 Specials") in the 1980s and 1990s. And I could safely say that most of the punters on board weren't bothered about what engine was in the power car.

Well, you're wrong.

The train will be all FC bar one carriage (TGS), which the norms will love.

It's going to a railway museum, which norms with kids or older couples will love.

It's going to to Bristol, which many people will enjoy visiting.

It does a bit of mega HST track (P'bory), which will attract some Part fare people.

Funnily enough, not all tours that happen are for cranks.

The man knows whats he is on about, look at Pathfinders traction list for 2010 66s and 67s, cant say many cranks will book on them can you.

I hope to do Bristol-Bristol on this with the rare track bit. if all works out well I sould make the XC HST back home too

Although not particularly relevant at the time as all HST power cars had Valentas in then.

Oh, of course. Excuse my thinking....

Although not particularly relevant at the time as all HST power cars had Valentas in then.

That was my point - I didn't want someone claiming "ah well people did tours with HSTs cos they were all Valentas, they wouldn't bother now".

VP185s and Mirlees Blackstones, am I right?

Yes. Although from the top of my head, I don't know whether a Mirrlees one worked on a 125Special. I'm sure one must've but I don't have the gen to hand (plus checking SBJ isn't a good use of my time!)

I quite fancy doing a railtour, having never done one, but the thought of a load of idiots hanging out of the windows screaming and waving their arms really puts me off. So I'd be more likely to do this than one with a 31, a 20, a 37 AND a Deltic on the front, and 10 Mk Is on the back!

A special Modern Railways & Railways Illustrated Railtour!

‘The Brunelian’ - Saturday 25 September 2010 - An HST special to mark GW175

* Ride on the Portbury and Avonmouth lines
* Visit the STEAM museum in Swindon
* Travel the length of Brunel’s railway from Bristol to London via Box
* Dine in style en route
* Meet the Modern Railways & Railways Illustrated teams

The Great Western Railway was incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1835.

To mark this anniversary, Modern Railways is running a special tour train in conjunction with First Great Western and Pathfinder Tours.

Readers are promised an exciting day out on the GW system taking in several
historic features of Brunel’s railway, plus some rare freight line tracks.

The enterprising folk at First Great Western intend to split two trains for us, joining together the First Class sections to make a 2+7 set with a high proportion of dining seats.

The 2+7 formation will include two Trailer First Buffets, four Trailer Firsts plus a Trailer Guard Standard.

We will use this non-standard set to tour Brunel’s railway.

Fares

Standard Class
Adult - £65.00
Junior - £32.50

First Class
Adult - £108.00
Junior - £88.00

Premier Dining
Adult - £179.00
Junior - £159.00

Deduct £10 per person if you prefer to spend the afternoon in Bristol and miss out the Portbury branch trip.

‘Table for Two’ seats available in First Class and Premier Dining at a supplement of £20 per person.

Premier Dining does not include alcoholic drinks, which may be purchased separately on the day.

Klambert, if you have orgasms over a Paxman Valenta engine, then I think that:

1. You need psychiatric help
2. You're in the wrong forum and you should consider going to WNXX.

I for one love the HSTs for what they are, they're my "local" TOCs long distance train, I don't care whether it has a VP185, Paxman Valenta or MTU engine in the power cars, all I give a damned about is the fact it gets me from A-Z calling at the required shacks in between and gets me there on time.

Should be booking this dead soon. Stoke Gifford to Stapleton Road via Avonmouth's rather large HST track, Portbury too.

Hoping to do it throughout, although that'll depend on the on-the-day farces!

Would obviously be preferred if it were Valenta, but I'm quite happy to have MTUs!

He may eventually discover girls and or boys (or maybe in-between too)
